Spray Chassis w/ WD40?

Well I just thought about this at work today. Could spraying my chassis and frame down with WD40 help prevent rust? It already has the factory coating on it.

hmm, that doesn't sound right to me. Yea, it might help for all of a few hours. Untill it drips off as an oiley mess on the road... What about when it rains? It will surely come of then as well.

try the "rubberized spray paint" if you want to coat your undercarrage!

I remember guys spraying it on their frames at truck shows. Trying to make a stock undercoated frame look like it was glossy. ???

I have used both WD-40 and PAM (cooking spray) to coat the underbody before a mud or dragstrip outing with good results.

The PAM worked better.

I don't think either of them are suited for long term protection though (>1 day). :thumb:

I use No Touch tire foam to clean some of the dirt off the frame and to keep it nice and black. Otherwise rubberized undercoating is the next best thing. I would go over the already rusty spots with a rust remover or rust neutralizer before putting on the undercoat. :thumb:

We spray down the metal parts on our snowmobiles to prevent rust while they sit in the garage over the summer and this works great. But of course, they are stored, and not subjected to weather, and don't already have undercoating on them. If my Biochemistry serves me correctly, there is a rule regarding solvents, "Like dissolves Like". I am not positive, but depending on the compostition of the WD40 and the undercoating, you make actually dissolve some of the undercoating, which I am assuming is petroleum based. WD40 while being an oil does make the claim on the can of being a cleaining agent. Just my $0.02

Yeah mcali17 has a point, when I get undercoating or paint on my hands I use WD40 to take it off before the soap and water! But since the undercoating on your vehicle is already dry, it will probably just shine it for a short period of time and have no protection properties! I used to use it on tires and stuff but it collected a lot of dust IMO!

Whip you up some home-made Waxoyl and you'll never have to worry about rust again (do a google search on Waxoyl, there's instructions out there somewhere).

What's that? The old 30% motor oil, 70% diesel mix?? I have heard of people spraying that on as an undercoating, and then driving on dirt roads to have it all stick together. Most of the underside of my truck is plastic now anyway. I was suprised to see that all of my inner fenderwells are plastic.

I made a paste with creamy petroleum jelly and baking soda. I then dipped a towel into it and scrubbed. It doesn't come off easily, it took about 15 minutes but it is about 99% gone.

Thank you for resurrecting a topic that hasn't had a reply in 9 years to tell us of a concoction that takes 15 minutes to use and still doesn't clean up the mess 100%!!!

an old timer told me this once, i thought he was crazy lol. he said he did it about once a year.
