Why No Chips?

why does there seem to not be any chips available for the gas trucks, IE one that plugs in between the pcm and the wireing harness with a multiposition switch to select differnet tunes. It seems all that is available is eather hand held programers or getting your ecm reflashed

Because those were the earlier days and all they did was trick certain sensors into giving it more timing and fuel. That question is sorta like asking why do people not put 305 heads on 350s anymore? If you wanna do that google "IAT trick silverado" and see what you find.

i had a chip in my 7.3 power stroke that i had before i bought 8.1L and i found it to be far superior to the hand held programmer, plus liked being able to select different tunes at the turn of a switch, i don't like the idea of sending my pcm to be re flashed because then i am stuck with the tune they install and if i want to detune it for towing real heavy or working the truck real hard for extended periods of time i don't have the option of doing that, programmers typically have very generic tunes and don't offer much benefit. although the main things id like to do on my 8.1L though is remove some of the torque management and maybe advance timing a little bit

You need to look into this:

You can have several custom tunes and swap between them easily. And a custom tune by BB will blow away any tune you ever had from a chip

I like Pringles.....

but if you are talking about tunes for your truck, if you want to be that picky then do like I did, buy HP Tuners and tune it yourself, then you can also create an unlimited number of tunes to do whatever task you need for the day. Or you can be lazy and let someone else do it for you and you may or may not be satisfied.

did some searching on hp tuners, looks like something i may really be interested in. how user friendly is it to operate? as in can someone that has never tried doing there own tuning do this with minimal complications? im also still a little confused on the licensing that they have listed.
