My Front End Vibration At 60-65 Mph Solved

Hey guys

 

Wanted to give some info on my front end vibration that I have been fighting for some time. At around 60-65 MPH the front tires seemed to have vibration almost like out of balance. Well after several times at the shop getting Road Force balance with no luck. I had to do my brakes this week. Well I replaced my Rotors and Pads up front. Well after the replaced Rotors the vibraion is now gone.

 

Question: Not sure but is it possible for Rotors to be out of balance? I have not heard of this but wanted ot ask.

Rotors can be out of balance but in 15 years of doing front end work on GM vehicles, I've never seen one.

 

Most likely it was just a wheel mounting issue or a brake pulsation.

I have had warped rotors but no vibrations. JMO, but i think it is highly unlikely.

I'm in the same boat right now, not only at 60 -65 mph but between 30-35 mph as well

on my 03 Silverado 1500 ext. cab. with 60k on the clock.

I live in NJ and Dec.26th we got hammered with almost 3' of snow so 4 wheel low and high was engaged

until we got plowed out. Ever since then I have been experienced the vibration/rumble.

 

I did a 4 wheel brake job this past summer along with new rotors and never felt a pedal pulsation so i can

almost rule out the out of round rotors.

 

Could I have done something to the front diff. ?

Or if I did I would experience the vib./rumble at all speeds and rpm's ?

 

I'm lost to an explaination or reason :P

Anything with rotating mass can be out of balance. Another possibility...I had a brake pulsation that showed up shortly after the Chevy dealer rotated tires during a normal service. A few months later, had the tires replaced at a small repair shop. The dealer had over-tightened the rims so bad the tire shop needed to raise their shop air pressure to get the rims off the truck. After changing tires, the shop properly torqued the rims by hand. Was pretty obvious that the Chevy dealer tech distorted the rotors by over-tightening. It took a couple of weeks of heat & cool cycles but eventually the pulsation went away.

If I was to guess, if they were warped really bad, then they might be scrubbing the pads, causing vibration?

Yes, it is possible for rotors to be out of balance. In fact, all good quality rotors are balanced after they are made, usually by removing a small amount of metal from the edge near the center of rotor, which will not affect the brake pad contact surfaces. Of course, there are plenty of cheap rotors out there which are never balanced. If you cannot find a spot of the rotors where some metal was taken out, it means that most likely it was never balanced when made.

No, We can rule out snow in the wheels.

There is a lift where I work and i had it up in the air, took all of the wheels off to see if anything could have been loose or broken. Found nothing. Checked wheels while they were off, found nothing there as well.

Check universal joints. I developed a vibration and couldn't solve it. Checked the U joints and found rear was a bit loose.

Took the truck to a shop.

Passenger side front wheel bearings was the culprit for the vibration. So I decided to have both sides changed out. I also had a slight rotational squeek when driving. That turned out to be a VERY DRY rear universal joint, so they were replaced as well. $675 bucks later we're rolling again !

      2 speed transfer case optional now?

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
