2k2TahoeSS Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 How much money you think i could get an 1980s camero for? Thinking of saving up, buying one, then working a weeee bit on it. Ben
chevy4x4trucks Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 are you talking 2nd gen or 3rd gen? I say 3rd, IMO the 2nd gens are just plain ugly. A 3rd gen that's in decent condition will prolly run you about 6grand perhaps. I was thinking about getting one myself for a summer vehicle. They're cheap, easy to mod, and you can find them anywhere.
2k2TahoeSS Posted October 4, 2002 Author Posted October 4, 2002 yeah, i was talking 3rd gen. are they really $6,000? s*%t, i was hoping they would be a bit cheaper. hmmmm. Looks like i will be saving up for a while then... Ben
chevy4x4trucks Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Well, it all depends on where you look and what condition you want. I'd prefer one w/ t-tops that works right from the start. I don't want to dump a bunch of time and money to get it running. But, I had a friend who sold his for 2grand, pretty nice one too, body was in great condition and I think the guy was pulling 12's or 13's in it.
hogger999 Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Wow we all think alike. I'm currently very interested in this '87 IROC. It has 91K miles and a 350 w/5k on it, 5 speed, and t-tops. The interior is in really good shape but it needs a few minor things like a steering column (loose), drivers door handle is also loose. Of course I need to find out what it would cost to paint it. It ran great and I don't think its a bad price at $3600
chevy4x4trucks Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Not too bad and the price seems fair. I'll have to see if I can force myself to save money this winter and get one for next summer, but I'm sure I won't be able to, not this year at least, tuition is taking its toll.
MarkD Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Personally I prefer the early 2nd gens. My bro has a 91 that we have sufficiently boogered up Where are you located? A friend of mine is trying to sell his Camaro (84 I think). 406 cu in. 12 bolt rear.
95_togo Posted October 21, 2002 Posted October 21, 2002 i sold my IROC for $600....bought it for $500 and couldn't get the #### thing started!!!! figure it was a fuel pump (and pump was in the tank, couldn't figure out how to drop the tank,) so i sold the car
Tucson_02Silverado Posted October 21, 2002 Posted October 21, 2002 Look for a 90-92 RS V6. First you have all the cladding of an IROC. Second, insurance costs by the VIN says you have a V6. Kelly shows private party sale of a 92 RS V6 $5200 fully loaded with 60K miles and excellent condition (Arizona Rust free). A Z28 same mileage and condition with 5.7TPI (L98) shows at $6900. If you were looking for one of these to build into an buzzer squasher, why waste the extra money on the TPI equipped ones that need a rebuild anyways. Chances are you were going to rebuild the suspension and put frame stiffeners on. And you were probably going to replace the rear end with a Dana or the like. Freshen the brakes up to 1LE versions...etc. So the difference in cost completely rebuilds the suspension and brakes to canyon runner grade. The only other decision left is if you want a do it yourself grind-a-box, buy it that way to begin with.
Tucson_02Silverado Posted October 21, 2002 Posted October 21, 2002 Just an FYI, no 3rd Gen F-Bodies were GM factory equipped with a 5 speed and the 350. 350 (L98) were 700R4 auto only. Anyone tells you different is either plain out lying or completely overwhelmed by the myth. The other reason I mention this is that a lot of 305TPI to 350TPI conversions used the 305's computer, plenumn, injectors, intake, etc., all of which completely starve the 350 to death. So you would be buying a lot of pieces to bring the 350 back just to stock potential.
varmint2506 Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 I'm with MarkD on the second gens. If you are interested in a second gen. check out: Second Generation For Sale This site is great for just about anything you want to know on Camaros. :thumb:
Tucson_02Silverado Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 Varmint2506, MarkD, I agree the 2nd Gen makes a statement. Of all my past vehicles, I miss my 77 TA the absolute most.
Mr Dave Posted November 19, 2002 Posted November 19, 2002 The other reason I mention this is that a lot of 305TPI to 350TPI conversions used the 305's computer, plenumn, injectors, intake, etc., all of which completely starve the 350 to death. So you would be buying a lot of pieces to bring the 350 back just to stock potential. The whole TPI induction system starves a 350--there were no differences between the 305 and 350 TPI intakes, runners, etc. The mass airflow computers on the 305 engines are easily used on 350's with a little higher fuel pressure. I used to own an 88 IROC, 350 TPI. I swapped in a T5 5 speed and a 3.70 geared rear end. That along with a cam, some intake, and exhaust work and I had a mean sounding ride. I got $1800 on trade in for it because someone had rear ended me and pushed me into a truck in front. So it had paint damage front and rear. You can usually find 350 IROC's and 350 TA's for $4-$5k in this area.
