05 Half Ton Leaf Spring Q

Recommended Posts

I just bought an 05 Z71 and I was poking around underneath it, looking to see what lift options I might use. I noticed that the leafs under there look kinda wimpy. Ive never owned a true half ton before and Im not sure if the rear leaf springs under my truck are stock or not. There are only 3 leafs and it looks like a small block has been placed between the leaf and the axel. IS this the stock setup?

I was also currious as to whether or not I could use a set of stock 1500HD springs to replace my current ones.?

Thanks in advance.

Just add leaves. Those trucks will haul more than the previous Generation 2500HD will. They may look small, but they are not weak.

Yeah that is the stock leaf pack. I had a 2000 1/2 ton that I swapped out for 2500hd springs. They bolt right in. I left the block in the rear for a little extra height. Made the truck handle a trailer much better.

Im just wondering if the leaf setup I have now is factory or not. I bought the 1/2 ton because I dont need a hauler any more.

If I put 1500HD (yes 1500HD not 2500HD, I dont want that much bounce.) springs on it, it would only be for lift without axel wrap. I dont like blocks much and I dont feel comfortable disassembling a spring pack without the proper tools.

If I'm not mistaken 1500hd and 2500hd spring packs are the same. Both should be a pack of 5 springs with no lift block. Adding the springs will stiffen the ride, not make it more bouncy. The truck should sit the same height with 1/2 ton springs and lift block or 3/4 ton springs without block. You could either install the bigger leaf pack and leave the block in to gain height, or as stated before add some leaves to the 1/2 ton pack. Either way you end up with more leaves.

Heard clunking towards the rear left on my '05 1500 CCSB. Turned out to be a broken lower leaf spring. Didn't know hauling hockey gear could put so much strain on the suspension. Does anyone know if there was a recall on these springs or will I have to dish out $ for something that shouldn't wear out prematurely? I miss my '95 ECSB...

I guess I meant rough bouncy, not spring bouncy. But anyway, I was planning on running the 1500HD spring pack with the lift block. that way I can get the lift Im looking for and still be able to reduce axel wrap from the stock setup.

Holy crap - five hours labour to change out the driver's side rear leaf spring! They had to drop the gas tank out before they can remove the hanger bolt. What a poor design. :P

Good thread. I'm looking to do similar... either replace the existing pack or use an "add a leaf". Purely for handling/payload when towing.

Ide like to do something to mine just to reduce axel wrap, especially when I get around to lifting it. The slip yolk clunk is really annoying me.

Thats what I was thinking after browsing on Ebay, ut I was hoping the older ones would work, because there is a buy locally selling springs for a 97 for $50.
