Tpms - My Experience

2 days before Christmas I put a new set of shoes on my truck; a set of Cooper Discoverer S/T's 285/60R20. Since then the TPMS has been totally wacked out. I came out here and read a bunch of threads about how to reset and recalibrate the system and came home to put my newfound knowledge to work.

I tried to get the system reset 4 times this afternoon and I never got it to work. I finally realized that the right front sensor is on the left front tire. I don't know where any of the others are located on the vehicle.

Momma always told me that free info is worth what you pay for and in this case, she was right. Now, I'm not ragging on anybody and I'm not placing blame on anyone here. I should have RTFM before I started but I didn't. The instructions that I printed out describing how to do this left out 1 crucial point that the manual states. (Sorry I don't have the link to the thread that I'm referencing. I looked for it but couldn't find it again.) Anyway, the one crucial point that was left out of the instructions I got was to turn the "Learn new tire positions" ON with the DIC. If I had done that I think it probably would have worked. I'll try again tomorrow if I can.

For the life of me, I couldn't get mine to reset as per the owners manual... after trying, failing and driving around for a week with a stupid orange light on my dashboard, a friend at GM Service took his little wireless remote thingy, and in 5 minutes had all four re calibrated for free.

Don't feel bad. We have a hard time at the dealer resetting some of them. The tpm system, in my opinion, is the BIGGEST pain the a$$ yet. All cause some dipsh!t is too lazy to check the tire pressure once in a while. :nonod:

I couldn't get mine programmed from the info online nor using the manual. I have a great shop I deal with and they did it for free using whatever tool the dealer uses. Yes free. I've been doing business with them for about 8 years (so technically I've paid for it, right?).

Well, I'm bound and determined to do this myself. But you guy's experiences are leaving me less than optimistic. I'll try it again though and if it doesn't work, I'll drop by the dealer. The tire dealer I got them from basically threw up his hands when I called him about it. Basically said it was part of the truck and not his baby. I don't completely agree but I can see his point.

Hey SouthCo, your truck looks just like mine except for the grill and the mirrors!

Your gonna chase your tail. To do it you need a Tech 2 and a TPMS tool. Even then I've had a few kick my ass and take forever to get working just right...

really? I got mine to recalibrate no issue when I rotated my tires after that incident with the 5 nails. I followed the owners manual to the letter, as the wheels were moved front to back and vice versa. did it in the parking lot at the GoodYear Store and was done in 5 minutes.. it worked perfect the first time.

turn the key to run (don't start the truck)

press the lock and unlock at the same time on the key fob, horn will honk twice..

you have 5 minutes to complete the relearn or you have to start over..

start at the drivers front, then passenger front, then passenger rear, then drivers rear, in that order..

let air out of the tire for a count of 30 or until the horn honks once.. then move to the next tire..

when complete horn honks twice to signal re-learn complete..

then go add back the air you removed..

it needs to lose approx 5 pounds of air pressure in each wheel to sense a pressure change and sync the TPMS..

The instructions in the owner manual worked for me a year ago when I put new tires on. I even did it a few times for some silly reason. But when I rotated them this week, I couldn't get the last tire to connect. I tried it 7-8 times and gave up.

I took it to the Costco tire shop, because I was there, and they tried the manual method and got the same problem. The tech pulled out a Bartec 400 reset/diagnostic tool and said the wheel sensors were transmitting properly. He then went thru the reset process with that tool and a few minutes later I had a reset system. The charged $4.

Got a $70 re-learn activator tool from ebay. It came in and I just tried it. Worked like a charm. Took about a minute for the whole re-learn procedure.
