Clunk Coming From Rearend

I have noticed a clunk coming from the rearend of my truck. I only hear it when I brake hard and the truck rocks back, or when I put it in reverse and the transmission shifts and the truck moves while Im still holding the brakes.

Yea, kinda does sound like the dreaded gm "stop clunk". Grease the slip yoke as mentioned. Do a search under that and you will find a lot of info about it.

Yeah, I found it. Did anyone determine whether or not it will hurt my trnafer case, or is it just annoying?

Still wondering if it will hurt anything, but, I also called 3 mechanics this morning (2 dealerships, one local). The dealerships gave me their typical, "Well, you just need to bring it in and have it looked at," and my local guy said it could be the transfer case having slack in it so its no big deal. All three said that they havnet seen the slip yolk problem on the 99 - 06. Is that a problem primarily in the NNBS trucks?

Stack up lash between the trans, t-case and rear diffs was a normal characteristic of the GMT800 trucks. That is why the 900's have what we call "torque management" built in to the ecm/tcm's.

I have of course, seen the slip yoke issues, which is more of a honk noise imo, along with a few noisy t-cases. If it

gets considerably better in 4HI, you might want to have the t-case looked at. Otherwise, I wouldn't sweat it.

My 2000 Silverado had it and I got tired of messing with it after about the 5th time. It would come and go, and nothing ever broke.. Unless that was causing it to eat fuel pumps. :(

My 08 had it shortly after I got it, and since it has the 100k powertrain warranty, I made the dealer do it this time and it hasn't come back.. But it has only been a couple thousand miles.
