Slip Yoke

I have a 2007 silverado, it was lowered and goes down the road, really good, no vibration.I looked at the shaft yesterday, as i am getting a clunk on severe bumps.The pinion angle is up abit over normal.and the yoke is slid into the trans, all the way up to about an inch and one half from the trans.And it is rusty, but nothin lleaks.

Is the yoke supposed to be slid back out some, which i can do with wedges.

but friends tell me if it isn't broken don't fix it. I thought it may be the driveshaft ramming into the trans. making the rare clunk like noise. What do you think? thank you for anything you can give me.

Yes the slip yoke would look like most of it's inserted. Try dropping the drive shaft, and packing the spline with grease to take up some of the slack. :thumbs:

 

Actually a common problem for the GMT-800's and some of the 900's.

Thank you for the tip.i have built many hot rods.i never packed them with grease in 40 years! Didn't know i was supposed to.never had any bad luck with them being slid in to far?----------- was bothering me abit.Cause i always set them an inch past center of yoke.

If its supposed to be slid in this far, where is the slack at your speaking of.??????

It's been an issue with GM trucks since the 1999 GMT-800 trucks. GM's using Nickle plated slip yokes, and over time they wear some causing a bumping sound/feeling when either pulling out or coming to a stop. Almost feels like the gas tank slide and bumped the body.

If you want to check the slack in the yoke, check a driveshaft build website. They can tell you how far the yoke should be into the trans at ride height when measuring shaft length. Last I heard, trans yokes should be about 1 - 1 1/4 inches from bottoming out in the trans at ride height when doing the overall measurement. Some say, no more than 1" for best tailshaft bushing wear.
