Looking To Buy A Chevrolet 2500hd

Hello,

 

Newbie looking to post some questions for some answers.

 

I'm looking at a 2002HD Chevrolet 4x4 with a bit of mileage at about 151500. I like the truck and it appears its beeen taken care of for the most part. It does have some imprefections for a truck of this age. My worry is that it will need major repair at about 200K if not before. The price is about 9K. Extended cab 4x4.

 

What is your opinion. KBB rates this truck in fair condition at 10,400 in our area. I'm hoping the truck will last up until 250K miles. Can I expect that out of it? What is a rough gas estimate on these trucks. Engine is a 6.0 liter.

 

Thanks for your suggestions. When it cranks, it has a little noise even when it warm. I heard that is a common problem. While driving it on a test run I heard a slight noise in the dash clattering noise but I don't think it was valves are anything. It was sort of odd and seemed to subsided. What you guys think?

Too many miles for me. Probably be a money pit. Save your money and get one with less miles.

This is the cheapest I've seen around here. Most are more and most have more mileage as well. I saw a 1500, 2001 extended cap with 150K and the guy wanted 7500 for it. Of course there is the 2004 Crew cab 2500HD for 14900 but that's way over my ability to pay the loan. Are the 2500HD's 6.0 money pits?

 

I've heard good reviews and I've heard they go for 250K before needing major work. Do you guys have a different opinion on the 6.0 Liters 2500HD's

They are pretty rock solid. 150,000 miles isn't bad. I wouldn't be afraid of it if the price was right. The mileage you can expect to see is 13-18mpg. Just be sure to have a mechanic go over it to make sure there's no major issues.

 

Only major think that comes to mind is the transfer case. Check it close for leaks. There was an issue with a clock spring that rubs a hole in the side of the case. Otherwise pretty solid. LQ4 motor come with 300hp and 360 tq I believe for that year.
