No Power To New Head Unit

I went to Wally-World last night and I found an install kit with a wiring harness adapter, a dash kit, and a door chime module all in one box for $80. I thought this would be a good deal because Iv used Scosche products before with good results. I got it home and started the install but things started going wrong quick. I noticed that the kit included some of the wrong mounting hardware and was missing a package of screws. I thought that was wierd because it was a new, completely unopened package that was still factory sealed. But, with a little modification and some screws from my bin, I was back in business. I got the wires all hooked up, and started installing the new HU, but when I checked in to make sure it was going to work, nothing happened. I chased fuses, checked connections, unhooked and reconnected wires, even powered up the HU directly from the battery (it was working properly) and never got any signal. I think it has something to do with the chime module because thats where the remote 12v is coming from. That seems to be the only wire that is not getting power.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I cant really box it up and bring it back because its been cut and spliced and the dash kit was modified. Plus, I kinda tore up the package trying to get it open. What do you suggest?

I went through two of these schosche modules when I installed my head unit they are junk. I would take it back any way.

Also is there an external relay on the harness you have? If not that may be the problem. If you have a multimeter, test the red wire on both sides of the module with the ignition switched to on this will tell you if it is the module or not. there is no switched 12v source in our trucks in the radio plug, the relay creates it.

Well, I figured out the main reason. I bought the wrong damn kit. For future reference, just because it says for 04 and up, doesnt mean all 04 and up. I knew that but I misread the list on the back. The kit I got was for an 07+.

Im gonna take it back and see if they will exchange it.

Yeah, if it was for your truck it would say like 01 up, because malibu's and whatnot were using the 03-07 radios back then always read the back of the package and look for 03-07classic pickup.

I'd stay away from the scosche kits if you can. I had a chime module that liked to fail in the "on" mode. I would have times where I could open and shut the doors with the key out and it would keep playing till I pulled the radio fuse. The module would also get confused and work during acc but not during "run". If the weather dropped below 32F, it would fail just about every time. I spoke with Schosche support several times. They admitted that the module can get confused and needs to be reset periodically by disconnecting the box for a few minutes. I was irritated with their acceptance of poor quality. The final straw came when the module started shutting the unit down but let a "ticking" sound out of its speaker. I ignored it for a few hours and returned to a dead battery. I read the reviews of the similar models from other brands on Crutchfield, finding results like mine scattered around.

Well, you get what you pay for I guess. The Scosche module is $30 while the ones on crutchfield are $70. I just want to get it running right now, I can always get an upgrade later if mine fails. I know its cheaper in the long run to buy the good one first, but money's tight with the new baby so I have to scrimp and save for what Ive got.

are you sure the $30 one is the right one? The one I bought from best buy was $150. The number is GMLAN2SR (that is the one for the 03 - 06 Silverado). It looks like it is $110 from best buy.

But, Wally World uses their own model numbers because they sell a genaric one for multiple GM vehicles so it may not be the same.

It was actually $40. Ill let you know if it works. I returned all the stuff I had, but they didnt have the stuff I needed so I am going to try another store later.

Got the unit running and installed my new HU with the steering wheel conrols adapter. Now I have a good looking stereo that has all the functions of the stock HU, except for SSV and the tendency to eat CDs.

However, I made the mistake of telling my wife, "now my stereo install if finally finished." I should have knocked on wood, because the Scosche adapter started the same issue that rebelman06 had. I imediately got out and pulled the radio fuse when I got home. I had it out about 10 seconds and reinstalled it, and everything was back to normal. I drove back to work and parked where I could get a jump if I need it this afternoon. Im gonna keep an eye on it, and if it keeps acting up, Im gonna return it (I kept the box after seeing your comments) and buy the good one. Is the one on Crutchfield.com any good? Its got a 4 of 5 rating.

I deal with this stuff on a daily basis, installing is what i do for a living. I would agree stay away from Scosche products. I've had very bad luck with them. I would highly recommend replacing that harness with a Metra (Axxess Interface) GMOS-01. I just did a Kenwood DNX-6160 in-dash NAV in my wifes TrailBlazer I used a GMOS-04 which is for Bose systems and an ASWC steering wheel interface. I wired the harnesses up on the bench and everything was just plug and play. To setup the steering wheel controls was just a matter of tapping the Vol Up button on the wheel about 6-8 times. Done. The ASWC auto detected the vehicle and the head unit. I doesn't get any easier than that. You can get the Metra stuff at most local install shops or any Best Buy.

Well, It happened. The damn thing crapped out on me and wreaked all kinds of electrical havock. I screwed with my door locks, power windows, the dash cluster, interior lighting, and the push-button 4wd. I thought I had a major short somewhere, but after I unplugged the Schosche interface, everything went back to normal. Plugged it back in, problems came back, and they went away when I unplugged it again. So, I know that was the source of the issues.

It eases my mind knowing that I dont need major electrical work, but it pisses me off because I had to miss the best morning for deer hunting all season because I was worried about being stranded in the woods.

So, now that I know the issue, what is the best interface to replace it with. I tried the number listed in Sinkhole's post, but that one is for a truck with Onstar. I have neither Bose nor Onstar. Which one would you guys recomend.

If you don't mind giving up retained-power and the door chimes, you can just remove the Scosche box from the wiring harness. The you can connect the red power wire from your headunit to a fuse that turns on when you turn the ignition switch.

If you want to keep those things, I recommend the C2R-GM24 by PAC-Audio. Just remember to cut off the RCA plugs on the wiring harness since you do not have Bose.
