I was wondering if anyone here has or knows of someone with one of these?

I'm thinking of buying a 2011 Jetta diesel

Was wondering what the pro & cons would be with such a car?

I have always has North American made.

I live in Ontario Canada.

The one I'm looking at is loaded also.

Also what price did you negotiate? (PM me if you like)

Thanks all

The company I work for bought a new Jetta wagon (gas model) and though we've on;y had it 3 months, I like it (we use it for service calls within 400 miles or so of the office). The 2.5 I5 seems peppy enough (we used to have a base model Outback, and that was a slug) the transmission is a six speed auto I think, with the manual mode. Interior is very well done and thankfully does not have the purple-ish lighting many VWs had for years. Seats seem comfy, though a bit narrow for me but I'm a fatass. The radio is my only beef- I do not like the touchscreen setup at all. Changing stations is a huge pain, especially on satellite where there are tons of stations to navigate through. The screen also doesn't dim enough at night for my tastes so I have to go in and change it in the menus, which is sort of a pain. Overall I like the car quite a bit for what we need it for at work. I can't comment on price as my manager was the one who did the purchase.

I have friends with the 2L turbo one....or 1.8L or something of the sort...its a turbo gas pot....with a stick

They really like it, quiet, crispy turns, nice shifts...awesome on fuel

I also have a friend with an 07 diesel. That thing is beautiful man...I have driven it and ridden in it quite a few times...it is the same thing, nice handling, without a harsh ride, its a stick too....has nice short shifts...gets 1200km to the tank...and is full under 100 bucks....used to be 65 to fill, but that was a couple years ago.

They are just so quiet though man...thats what I like.

I've been reading about the diesel one and people report getting 45 MPG on highway driving and 30-35 mpg in stop and go...plus there priced pretty well

We had an older New Beetle Diesel. It was a 1.9L turbo that got incredible fuel mileage. Almost 50 MPG on the highway and 35-40 just running around.

my friend had one as a travelling product rep back in 03 or so he said if he ever had to do it again he would buy a gas model, he said with the price of maintenance and the amount extra the diesel cost in the car price it worked out to being overall more expensive

The TDI has pretty much been the same Diesel for the past 15 years. It's a good engine, reliable, and it does get good millage. Yes maintenance costs may be more expensive because it is a diesel, and there is not VW Dealerships everywhere, but the fuel economy more than makes up for the difference. If you can negotiate a good deal, go for it. The TDI Jetta would be the only vehicle from Audi/VW I would buy.

X2...but I would also buy a GTI with the DSG transmission. My dad has an Audi A3 with the DSG and with that transmission and that small little car, it is a blast to drive...it's a go cart.

The Audi/VW DSG transmission is in a league of it's own. There is nothing else out there like it (in a normal car).

OK...

<--------------not a VW guy.....

WTF is a DSG trans....that tiptronic...or manual...

Fill me in on this....LOL.

Yes, as was previously stated.. On the gasser motors, VW/Audi have had oil sludge issues. (With top quality oil too) Very critical you change the oil in the gassers every 3k/3 months. Not sure if they have yet addressed the issue on the newer engines.

Thanks everyone.

We (the wife) really like it.

They said $150 to change the oil??? I will look into that & see if I do it will that be ok? If I can?

Price is my focal point, would like to know who has bought one & the deal they made.

Added myself onto a VW site but no action. (site seems DOA)

I would certainly look into changing the oil yourself. They don't even charge $150.00 to change the oil on the Duramax!

Likely its shell oil with a big VW stamp in it for 10-15 bucks a quart and a $30 oil filter.

Its no different from changing the oil on anything else...unless the 2011 engines have had a huge makeover. I would stick to shell Rotella oil for a diesel though...damn good oil man.

    • Even tougher is the 5.0 / 302. That's what this one has.    https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg   https://postimg.cc/4n3F3yzY   Just realized I had the airbox removed in the engine pic, lol.
    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
