Hi,

my girlfriend's looking to change car. She's looking at Chevrolet Cruze, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra and Kia forter sedan. All those 4 brand new.

I know the elantra, forte and sentra, but don't know anything about the cruze. Someone ever try it ? Wich is the best engine, turbocharged 1.4 or the basic 1.8?

If you have anything about the other 3 cars, any comments will be much appreciated.

thanks

Cruze.....but I'm kinda Biased :):)

I have the 1.4 turbo....its an LT with a couple upgrades like bluetooth

I have the A6, but if you get the eco version you can get an M6

I am currently getting 9.1L/100km 80% city driving...thats about 26 mpg, we also only have 2500km on it, so its still breaking in.

Its light years beyond the cobalt it replaces...and the trunk is freakin huge, as is the interior space.

My wife loves it too...we actually traded a cobalt for this one.

I drive it quite a bit too...I really like it man.

I checked out the cruze when I was getting my truck, very surprised how big it is, looks pretty good in my opinion, the turbo engine is pretty slick even though not a lot of power. I lived with a forte as a dealer courtesy car for a week a few years ago, they were just out at the time I had never even heard of it. I was impressed by it for a kia, was leaps and bounds ahead of every other kia I had been in, I thought it would be more expensive than it was actually but wouldn't recommended. Nissan sentra is just boring to drive. I have no experience with the hyundai.

Has she looked at one of the new jettas?

Yes she does take a look a the jetta, but they are a little bit expensive compares to the four other cars. But yes, they are very nice. I would like to have one in my driveway.

about a month ago me and my dad just got my mom a cruze with a 1.8 and a 6 speed. awesome car. has razor sharp handling, better then a BMW 328 according to a commercial, its got plenty of trunk space, bluetooth and XM and onstar all for 15,200. amazing deal. and on top of it all we are consistently seeing around 35 MPG. its not slow either, the 1.8 with the 6 speed has some nuts to it, youd be suprised. me and my dad opted to not get the turbo. we dont regret it. also has an amazing amount of front leg room. i have to put the seats all the way back in my silverado, im 6'1, and i cant put the seat all the way back in the cruze or i cant push the clutch in all the way. very suprising

your really have to go drive all of the cars and see which one you like, which one is the best priced, has the most for your money, and most comfortable.

not trying to start an argument at all, but come on, who wants a KIA or a Hyundai in your driveway? go with a honda or nissan if you want an import

No need to support Kia and Hyundai when they like to rip off exterior and engine designs from other auto makers. Crappy companies in my opinion. Have you also considered the Hocus Focus from Ford? Good little car from what I've heard.

Personnaly I won't buy Hyundai or Kia, but this will not be my car. My family in law only have Hyundai, that's why my girlfriend consider these model.

the new focus have a real good design, I'm just affraid that they get the same rust problem as the Mazda3...

I think she more like the cruze. Do you know who builded the turbo? A gm made ?

The new focus is, I forgot all about that, I lived in England for the last 4 years and the focus they sold there compared to here was ridiculously better but now that the 2012 is the same car everywhere it is quite nice but they also reflect the new quality in the price. The ford fiesta is another option though, tiny but fun.

on a serious note go for the cruze, they are like zombies around here...slowly growing in number, but then again GM dominates wisconsin

The thing I like about the Cruze here is that you don't see a lot of them on on the road here. like you said...they are slowly growing, but you get to drive something unique for a little while.

People ask questions about it all the time too. Have had a few people come over and look at it sit in it etc...Its kind of funny to do that with a $20K car thats totally bone stock.

The cruze seems to be the best choice but I can't decide if we should take it turbo or n/a

Turbo got my vote right away...its not like its a turbo sports car...I believe it only makes a few psi of boost...if that. Its just to get the best fuel economy.

You cant ever hear it spool up or anything.

And it does have the best fuel economy. You also cant get certain options unless you get the turbo...Cant remember which ones, but we wanted the turbo, with onstar bluetooth heated mirrors...that sort of thing.

The sheer amount of space was what we liked....for a small car, it has a huge amount of passenger room and trunk space.

I can pop some pics of ours up if you want....gonna take a couple days though...I just had hernia surgery, and am not feeling my best....to say the least.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
