Ball Joint Replacement Questions

Recommended Posts

AmHey guys-

Have read the other threads about ball joint replacement, and ordered a bunch of stuff from RockAuto. Psyching myself up to do the deed next week and making preparations:

  • Parts are here
  • Bought a 36mm axle nut socket
  • Got 3 tubes of grease
  • Planning on borrowing the ball joint press from O'Reilly Auto down the road

Got any tips and/or servicing instructions for me? A mobile mechanic that happened to be in O'Reilly when I was checking out the ball joint press said that unloading the torsion bars was not needed, so some guidance there would be appreciated. Am doing the upper & lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends and drivers side wheel bearing/hub on my 2004 2500HD 6.0 4wd.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Not a bad idea to pick up a service manual. GM, Chiltons, Haynes. Or an Alldata subscription

I saw this wheel/hub replacement, but I didn't see anything for ball joint & tie rod specs.

May wind up sporting for a service manual, but was hoping somebody had some words of wisdom. You can learn a lot reading an encyclopedia, but real world experience is a huge benefit.

Wish I could help ya and would if I could. I'm going to have to do a similar project soon on mine. If you could take pics and do a write up, you'd greatly help me and others in the future.

Good luck.
