Quick Mod Of The Day: Homelink Gmt-800

Hey guys -

 

Figured I'd share a couple of pics of my latest mod. Been looking for an easy solution to the fact that I don't garage door opener remotes for both garage doors. I really didn;t want to pay $40+ for a stupid universal remote with 2 buttons. Every other car in the driveway has homelink so I was the odd man out. This got me thinking... Maybe I could install homelink, so I did some searching. Homelink modules that mount in the visor or headliner are realily available on used eBay (who knew)

 

So here's what i did. (You'll notice i got a module that isn't rolling code, but I didn;t care cause the price/color were right and my garage doors use the dip switches) So I jumped on it.

I really like your mod... and I do miss my Homelink that I had in the Ford.

 

Did you have any issues with the Homelink mounted right up against the roof? Did you have to remove some material from the roof's interior panel?

Wow, look at that. My truck had didnt have the optional garage door opener so I picked up the part off eby used. Stupid me should have done my research since I later found out that it is not Homelink and therefore not compatible with X-10 lighting which is what I wanted it for (Chevy is using that Z-Wave technology :/)

 

Homelink is though. Could you tell us the part number of what you used? Were you able to actually wire it in to the trucks power so it didnt need batteries?

I bought the overhead console for the Tahoe that didn't have the sunroof. It comes with Homelink buttons. I took the rear AC controls out of the new console and put my pocket back in. A little wiring and I had a factory looking and working homelink setup. I needed to run a wire for the illumination portion of the buttons. That was the only part I had trouble with figuring out but I connected a wire to the brake module illumination wire since my brake module didn't use it. The 3 buttons light up when the headlights are on and work as designed.

Cool! That'll work too, and will definitely look factory original. Trouble is it probabaly cost you more than $12 bucks (which id what I paid for the Homelink module...

Sorry, I guess I should have tracked this thread when I first posted it up. I answered your PM this morning but just so everyone else knows...

* I found there's alot of room up there, but I needed to put a smal piece of hard material ( I used a small piece of 1"x3" pine I had lying around to push the module against so it didnt feel flimsy. Nice and easy, no muss no fuss.

* Yes, the headliner was way to thick, so I had to trim some of the excess insulating material off the inside of the headliner in order to allow the module to sandwich with the homelink trim plate.

Just do a search on ebay for homelink, what you'll need to know is whether you not you need a code jumping homelink (google for info on this). Code jumping modules are a little more, but as compared to a new stand alone remote its a steal. The modules come with a simple 2 wire hook up, I wired mine to ACC so somebody couldn't easily break my window and open the garage doors while I'm not home... But you can do what ever you want....

Well now that you mention it, it cost me $2. I bought the Tahoe console for $42 on eBay and it was perfect, condition wise. My overhead console was still fairly new, so it was near perfect and I sold it for $40. $2 or $12 is still a great price for an option that you wanted and didn't get from the factory!
