Has anyone ever wondered why is it that dealer service departments try to scare you off with there pricing?

every time I check with them for a quote on getting something done on one of my trucks

they give me a quote that is so outrageously ridiculous even if I knew nothing about trucks would I pay it

They can't possibly think everyone is that stupid and don't look at other options

they gotta know the aftermarket is getting better all the time and more accessible

and more and more DIY sites are out there

How can they actually stay in business charging what they do its a Joke

even if I was filthy rich would I pay those prices they are asking

dealers are independently owned and operated, has nothing to do with GM other than they are an authorized franchise for selling and servicing.

prices for labor to a point are regulated, pricing for parts is set at MSRP, and the dealers have some play in what they charge beyond MSRP. I've seen shops that have 200% mark up and shops that have a 10% mark-up, all depends on who they cater too, take GMPARTSDIRECT.com for example, they are nothing more than a dealership parts department, but they have a huge Internet division, so their mark-up is lower than Joe and Bob's brick and mortar shop.

additionally in a GM shop you will only get GM parts, not some thrid party aftermarket part. Now that part may or may not be better than the aftermarket part, but it has a purdy GENUINE GM Sticker on it.

dealerships are for warranty work, beyond warranty work I would never take my vehicle to a dealer and pay 3 times as much for something I can usually do myself.

Wow, you actually paid those prices? WOW. That's crazy, beyond crazy. 383 dollars for a maf? I paid 75 dollars for a new one for my truck when I experimented with "porting" it. 50 dollars to reprogram a fob? You know there's instructions on the internet to do that yourself? 200 dollars for an oil change? .....

The oil change in question is likely the one with the hot oil flush. They want you to do it every XXX km...or every so many oil changes...Its total Bunk if you ask me....but they charge you 140 for the hot oil flush and another 50 to change the oil.

The prices they quote are based on a book...like Mitchell's....there are a few of them. They give the time required to do a job. And its gospel. If it says you take 2 hrs to do a job, you get charged for 2 hrs...even if it really takes 15 min. That's how mechanics make money. In a lot of shops they get paid for the time worked, on paper....not the time they punched in a day....Or they get bonuses based on productivity.

That's why after warranty is up, I don't go to the dealer for any type of services except recalls. I can have a better job done for less with just as good if not better parts.

Yeah as long as you go to "Joe's" Garage, A lot of big shops work on this same principal...just much less an hour.

WTF is a hot oil flush? I just paid $150 at Chevy for a trans filter change. And I already had the GM filter kit that they used. It was a rip-off but I just didn't feel like doing it myself.
