Advent Oem-style Navigation Installed!

You should take a look at the new Rosen Carshow 1210-US. I have installed it as well as the OGM-1 in a 2008 Yukon and can't find a big difference.

If you watch Ebay you can get the OGM-1 for around 800.00 new. Amazon has been selling the new version of Carshow for around 750.00.

If you compare the Rosen unit that ADC mobile sells which is a universal head unit you will be disappointed. It can't compare to the OGM-1. I believe they show a chart on their website that compares the two. However they do not compare the new version XL Series.

I have used both and they are basically the same unit with only minor differences. I would suggest getting the one you can find the best price on.

Has anyone been able to get Voice dialing to work with their Samsung Galaxy S4? I can connect via bluetooth and place and receive calls via the touch pad, but when I press the voice command button on the OGM-1, it won't take any commands. Has anyone got it to work with any other Android Phones, but most specifically, the Galaxy S4?

In the Rosen vs. Advent comparison, there really isn't any comparison anymore.

We've been with Rosen since DAY ONE on their navi product (we actually sent them the XM tuner they reverse-engineered for the GM unit when they first released it), and have seen every version they released since then. We sold quite few of these and had some success, but lack of reliability and features always made the Rosen very difficult to recommend, and we finally stopped selling them due to the failure rate. We then did mainly Kenwood and JVC in GM trucks, and even though we lost some features in the truck, we knew they had more features and wouldn't fail nearly as much as the Rosen.

Since the Advent has shown up, it's very honestly been a breath of fresh air! We can actually get excited about something that really works, has all the latest features, retains ALL the factory accessories and controls, is user-updateable, and very rarely fails (and when it does, they're relatively minor issues). Like @ride4chevy's post illustrates, the differences between the Rosen and the Advent couldn't be more stark.

We'll be selling Advent for a very long time to come...

I think you should make it clear to people that your website compares Advent OGM-1 to the old version of the Rosen Carshow. The new model Rosen 1210 is just as good as the Advent if not even slightly better. I have installed and used both. It is true that there is no comparison between the old Rosen you use in comparisons on your site and the OGM-1 but after using both I believe the new Rosen 1210 is slightly better and about 250.00 cheaper on Amazon.

When asked my opinion, I give it as honestly as I can based on the experience generated in 38 years as a professional installer. In this case, as both a Rosen (Car Show) and Advent dealer, when given an option between the two units for the same vehicle, I will always recommend an Advent. In an application where there is not an Advent available as in OE type unit, then a Rosen or Car Show unit may be the best option for a customer if the look is more important than some of the features or performance of the unit.

In my experience, the Rosen/Car Show product does not hold up head to head against the Advent, and I say this based on customer feedback and personal observation. I will make anyone a great deal on a Rosen Piranha-series Civic and CRV OE navi unit - both were returned by customers within two days due to FM reception issues (one in Seattle and one in Southern California, so we know that it's not just a local issue). We verified the exact same problem on one of our work vehicles that has the universal Piranha navigation system installed. The installer that drives that truck complains about it on a daily basis, and due to this, we have not sold one of these units in over a year. In contrast, we have now sold over 1300 (and counting) Advent OGM1 systems and I can count on one hand the number of complaints I have had regarding radio reception - based on our experience, this tuner is the equal or better of any tuner on the road, and it can be updated with firmware. Having said this, if you do not care about radio reception at all, then a Rosen/Car Show might work out very well for you.

In terms of other features and performance, the Rosen/Car Show can generally hold its own, because it is a good-looking interface and is customizable to a certain extent. Since it is based on a Clarion chassis, we know that there is some solid engineering from a very big company behind the scenes, and that is why it's so surprising that we have the major problems with the tuner. The only other issue I take with the system is in the way they make each one of these vehicle specific - the unit itself is the universal Piranha chassis, then you simply attach the vehicle-specific nose piece, in contrast to building a purpose-built chassis for each vehicle like Advent does.

Overall, the old adage "there's an ass for every seat" is alive and well in every category of consumer goods including in-car navigation - any deficiency in any product can be overlooked if the price is right...

BTW: We now sell the refurbished OGM1 for the same price you quoted for the Car Show - the main difference is that the Car Show comes with a one-year warranty and the refurbished OGM1 comes with the same three year replacement warranty as the new Advent unit.

Advent unit in mine is two years old and I'm quite happy with it. As for radio reception, the best I came across was the Blaupunkt unit I had in my 98 Jimmy. On clear days it could pull my NH/Boston stations when I lived in CT.

Mike - I long for the days of the old Blaupunkt units!

You are absolutely right - back in the 80's, the old CR2000/CR2001 units had the best tuners in the history of car audio...

Dang it I'm not that old Walt!

I had a Blaupunkt deck I got in 2003. It was still a great unit. Sold it to a gal at my last job and she had it in her pickup for years till she got a new rig.

I'm wondering if we are talking bout the same Rosen unit. The Rosen you show on your website is an outdated universal version. It is the same version you use to compare the OGM-1 to on your comparison chart.

I am referring to the Rosen 1210 that is for GM vehicles.....found here:

http://carshowelectronics.com/oe-look-navi-systems-xl-gm-series.html

That is the new XL series. If you do indeed sell that unit then why not compare it to the OGM-1 on your website's comparison chart. If you do you will find the new Rosen is equal to or better in many cases and 300 bucks cheaper.

That being said I installed both in my wife's Yukon and she wanted to keep the new Rosen XL series. No FM reception issues.

I'm guessing that we are not comparing the same model though. Surely if you sold the new Rosen XL series you would have a comparison chart that compared the OGM-1 to it and not to the outdated universal Rosen.

If you don't hve experience with the new Rosen 1210 XL series in a GM vehicle then you should really check it out. Phenomenal unit for the price. You have great videos by the way.

iv had the advent now for about half a year. i have the WDTV set up on it. it can be a bit buggy at times, especially when trying to change music while the nav is up. nav is awesome though. it make my stereo system sound light years better than the stock deck did. the layout is kind of plain, and doesnt have much flair to it. i dont like how when youre listening to music on the ipod and you want to search, say within a playlist youre already listening to, you have to navigate all the way back to that playlist instead of clicking a back button that takes you to a list that youve already search though. back up camera can take a few seconds to boot up which is annoying sometimes. i wish when youre doing bluetooth from your phone, the music info would show up on the deck. sounds like a rant, but the unit is really cool with all the other things it does.

You are right, the comparison chart on our website is for the older unit - I haven't updated it in awhile since there has not been a lot of call for the Rosen/Car Show unit locally since the local distributor sent all of them back to the factory and they don't stock them anymore. They do not work well in the Seattle area.

To get some kind of background to know where it does work well, would you mind sharing your location so I can get an idea what kind of terrain you deal with for FM reception?

I live in south Ga. so probably less hilly than Seattle.

So do you sell the new GM version Rosen 1210?

If so when you talk about bad FM reception are you talking about the old universal unit that you sell on your website or the new 1210?

Another big difference I noticed in the newer XL version I linked to above is it has MUCH quicker reverse camera on. The OGM-1 is rediculously slow at kicking on the camera.

There are several double din units on the market that are MUCH better at interfacing with an IPOD. However the OGM-1 and the Rosen 1210 are factory fit and that's why we buy them. It's a sacrifice you have to make unless you want to use an install kit and not have the factory look.

I couldn't agree more on the back-up camera on the OGM-1. REALLY slow cutting on. The new Rosen 1210 has "instant on" and is much faster. It also has a lot of really cool backgrounds you can choose from built in the radio.

It is actually about 300.00 cheaper on Amazon than the OGM-1 and has the exact same features.

The only thing I see I the OGM1 that could be changed and maybe there is a screen to do it (I haven't come across it yet) is when the volume is on '1' and it is still loud compared to the stock HU where you could dial the volume down to where it was barely audible. Is there a fix for this or is it the way it is?

    • tldr; Shade tree mechanic stumped by variable displacement AC compressor.   Not Silverado related, but for my 2000 Camaro SS. I've never really used the AC since acquiring the car a good handful of years ago. I plan to take it on a trip this summer so I wanted to make sure the AC was in good shape. On an 73 degree day in the shop with the car idling I set the AC on "Max", temp set to cold, and fan on hi. The compressor turned on and air turned nice and cold.   I let it run for several minutes but noticed the compressor never cycled off. The engine was up to temperature enough that it began cycling the cooling fans on high. I had a set of manifold gauges hooked up and it was consistently at about 25 psi on the low side and between 200 and 225 psi (warm engine) on the high side. Per temperature charts, the low side is low (should be 30-35) and the high side is a little high (up to 170 per chart). I read the low pressure as potentially being under-charged underscored by a continually running compressor This was also underscored by temp readings of mid-20 degrees at the vents. Not just cold, freezing cold. Switching off the AC but leaving the HVAC fan on high produced a deluge of condensation underneath the vehicle. I was getting ice buildup on the evap core most likely.   The low reading (25psi) concerned me that the compressor wasn't switching off so I swapped out the pressure switch. No change in behavior, still ran constantly.   The AC clutch works fine as it engages/disengages with the HVAC switch on command. The compressor relay is good as I swapped it with two different known good relays just to be sure. Having eliminated that, and the pressure switch, I added refrigerant, thinking the constant run and low "low" pressure were signs of a slight undercharge. Makes sense, the car is 26 years old and it doesn't appear the AC system has ever been touched.   Adding some R134a didn't meaningfully change the low side pressure. And that's when a lightbulb flashed upstairs. While I consider the car "old", it's possibly "new" enough to have a variable displacement compressor. Did some reading and sure enough. Dangit. I don't work on these for this reason.   Adding refrigerant means the compressor will just compensate and won't really change pressures until it's severely overcharged or undercharged. But at least I wasn't getting ice/frost anymore, but instead high 30 degree temps out of the vents. That's more normal, but with variable displacement now I have no idea where my charge level is at. It's probably overcharged now. The high side even with the engine radiating serious heat was never really over about 225.   The static pressure at room temperature is dead on, before and after the charge. Both high/low equalize after some rest.   I'm thinking I'll need to take it to a shop. I want the proper charge level so I'm not working the compressor too hard. The only way to get an accurate charge is to evacuate and then re-charge with the exact amount specified for the system -- at least that's what I'm reading.   Anyone here with modern automotive AC knowledge?
    • Mine is in the shop for the AC now. While it did get cold after a bit, it would take a while to even start to cool the air at all. Turns out the compressor was bad and cycling.
    • I call B.S. when I first moved to Texas my first house would only cool to 80 with the Texas heat. The AC tech said it was normal at 100 degrees outside. I remodeled the house put in a new AC. I could hang meat. My cars may need recirculating to start. Once moving it switches to regular AC and I could hang meat. Living in Texas no one would put up with only 20 degrees difference.
    • AC in home or auto only cool down 15-25 degrees from outside temp, but what will help is to put the ac in recirc mode this will recirc the Inside cabin air rather then trying to cool down the outside hot air, I always have mine in recirc mode.
    • Found the fix for this.  Untightan the bolt just below top linkage on the steering column, turn assembly left to reduce space between the two linkage rods at the steering column, tighten bolt.  Made a big improvement.
