Shit your right typed in advent in the search and that popped up.

If you do a search, you WILL NOT find a dealer that can advertise and sell the OGM1 online on Amazon or Ebay (heck, I can't even advertise a price for it!), so the SimpleSoft guys are getting sneaky and taking advantage of that by linking their advertising to "Advent OGM1" search terms.

You really do need to pay attention to the details on this deck, because although it looks very similar, the differences are pretty dramatic - this is the explanation I got from the Advent Navigation Product Manager when some customers were asking for more information on it:

From what I know this is a Canada based company.

They are buying these from China, it is an older platform. They are selling them directly to Amazon and Amazon ships them.

As for differences, they do not have or are able to run iGo mapping, they have some generic package. No map support for other countries.

12 Month warranty

iPod / iPhone control is very limited, no album art, no Pandora - I believe it is hard wired like the old Rosen, if so it will not be compatible with the iPhone 5.

You only have iPod or Aux, not both available - this is selected in the settings.

There is no Media link like we have.

No sat radio except for a real basic connection on the GM. No search, channel or cat guide.

The system is much slower and lags especially when loaded down with multiple options.

Bluetooth is a Chinese brand, no A2DP or address book search, limited connectivity, no Parrot Microphone either.

TFT viewing angle is much less then our panel, we use a High Quality TFT, these are relatively low grade.

The UI is extremely simple.

It is about a 4 year old platform if not older.

Although the price is much lower, you are going to get a far inferior product with not even close to the same feature set or warranty coverage. When all is said and done, there is one rule that applies here: "Buyer beware"

Maybe someday if I really decide I am keeping my 2010 I will look into one of these units. I still have a hankering for a 2015 Sierra CC All Terrain

Thanks a lot for the info, definitely not going that route now. I just don't understand the high prices of head units these days when you could get a 400 iPad which could do damn near everything this head unit could which I'm guessing they still go for around $1000. almost makes me tempted to build my own mini computer head unit. I know there is other options but i think they look like hell in this vehicle.

I definitely understand about pricing, but when you look at the engineering, features and warranty coverage of the Advent, then compare it to what you'd have to do for adaptors (and lose in factory features) to do a Pioneer or Kenwood, etc. in some of these trucks, the Advent is pretty competitive...

FOR FOLKS DESIRING TO KEEP THEIR FACTORY USB PORT...

Here's a quick and easy way to add a USB port and keep the factory position active. I used a two port hub I had lying around and a bulkhead USB female socket I found on eBay for $3. I taped the hub to the JLINK adapter that came with the OGM1 and ran two USB cables - 1 to the factory jack (male mini) and 1 to the socket. I mounted the bulkhead USB fitting in the rear corner of the upper glovebox of my 2013 Siverado. I also drilled a hole, installed a rubber grommet and ran an auxilary accessory cable (m-t-m) from the JLINK. I bundled the wiring together and fit it into a foam sleeve; then I found a nice little spot adjacent to the airbag in the dash and tucked everything away neatly to prevent and rattles and squeaks. Both USB ports work (though not at the same time) and mod only took 15 minutes.

I add my voice to the mass of praise to Walt at ADC Mobile - my install went incredibly fast and smooth thanks to his videos and sage advice. I looked at other units and the hassles of trying to get things to work half as neatly at the OGM1. To me it's a very good deal price-wise and I'm very pleased with the overall performance. Everything looks 100% factory and it sounds great!

Nice writeup!

One thing I might add to the equation is that we now stock the PAC USBCBL adaptor ($18 + shipping) which gives you a very heavy-duty male to female USB extension cable, and the great thing about it is that the female end has a nice rubberized flange designed to snap into a supplied underdash bracket or into a 3/4" (19mm) hole, allowing a perfectly flush mount that can be drilled into any flat panel:

If you are looking to extend or remotely mount any USB connection, this thing is pretty slick...

Wow... now that's slick. The panel mount USB female I used is by Switchcraft (available on eBay) - it takes a 7/8" hole, but you then need a USB Type B male to Type A male cable to run to the hub.

I find the factory USB port to be in an awkward place on trucks with bench seats, especially since I load up my truck with six people fairly often and those knees are just waiting to destroy my USB stick. I feel much better with it tucked away safely in the glovebox. I used a 64GB drive formatted to FAT32 and I was very pleased at the OGM1's ability to access everything on the drive very quickly. A lot goes into organizing music and loading a large USB stick, so it's worth locating it in a protected location.

Let's not forget sound quality that this system offers. Granted, I already had Alpine speakers installed and a subwoofer installed under the back seat but the sound quality from this unit blows away the Alpine head unit I had before. Sound quality was a huge factor for me as that's what I use most going to work everyday. I was a bit hesitant in getting this system as I hadn't heard it before I bought it. But it sounds fantastic. So, it's not just the navigation that is fantastic (my friend who has had 2 BMWs says it's one of the best navigation systems he has seen) but the sound quality is excellent, the bluetooth works very well with my phone, and the factory integration is pretty darn good, too. Only missing a few chimes when the key is off and the keys are still in the ignition (or headlights are still on with the manual setting). Is it expensive? Yep, it is. But if you get the factory system when you purchase a vehicle how much is that? This is so much better. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. I also just noticed the other evening when I was waiting for a friend in my truck that if you are facing west with the navigation turned on and the sun is setting there is also a sun that goes down in the navigation, too. That was pretty flipping cool!!! I didn't see it go all the way down but I watched it drop for a bit as it descended towards the horizon.

If for nothing else you have to get this system to watch the sunset. :)

Can't leave out the service that Walt provided. And you'll get excellent support for the product. It's easy to access the updates and the instructions for installation are excellent. (still enjoy the system, Walt. Thank you!!)

    • tldr; Shade tree mechanic stumped by variable displacement AC compressor.   Not Silverado related, but for my 2000 Camaro SS. I've never really used the AC since acquiring the car a good handful of years ago. I plan to take it on a trip this summer so I wanted to make sure the AC was in good shape. On an 73 degree day in the shop with the car idling I set the AC on "Max", temp set to cold, and fan on hi. The compressor turned on and air turned nice and cold.   I let it run for several minutes but noticed the compressor never cycled off. The engine was up to temperature enough that it began cycling the cooling fans on high. I had a set of manifold gauges hooked up and it was consistently at about 25 psi on the low side and between 200 and 225 psi (warm engine) on the high side. Per temperature charts, the low side is low (should be 30-35) and the high side is a little high (up to 170 per chart). I read the low pressure as potentially being under-charged underscored by a continually running compressor This was also underscored by temp readings of mid-20 degrees at the vents. Not just cold, freezing cold. Switching off the AC but leaving the HVAC fan on high produced a deluge of condensation underneath the vehicle. I was getting ice buildup on the evap core most likely.   The low reading (25psi) concerned me that the compressor wasn't switching off so I swapped out the pressure switch. No change in behavior, still ran constantly.   The AC clutch works fine as it engages/disengages with the HVAC switch on command. The compressor relay is good as I swapped it with two different known good relays just to be sure. Having eliminated that, and the pressure switch, I added refrigerant, thinking the constant run and low "low" pressure were signs of a slight undercharge. Makes sense, the car is 26 years old and it doesn't appear the AC system has ever been touched.   Adding some R134a didn't meaningfully change the low side pressure. And that's when a lightbulb flashed upstairs. While I consider the car "old", it's possibly "new" enough to have a variable displacement compressor. Did some reading and sure enough. Dangit. I don't work on these for this reason.   Adding refrigerant means the compressor will just compensate and won't really change pressures until it's severely overcharged or undercharged. But at least I wasn't getting ice/frost anymore, but instead high 30 degree temps out of the vents. That's more normal, but with variable displacement now I have no idea where my charge level is at. It's probably overcharged now. The high side even with the engine radiating serious heat was never really over about 225.   The static pressure at room temperature is dead on, before and after the charge. Both high/low equalize after some rest.   I'm thinking I'll need to take it to a shop. I want the proper charge level so I'm not working the compressor too hard. The only way to get an accurate charge is to evacuate and then re-charge with the exact amount specified for the system -- at least that's what I'm reading.   Anyone here with modern automotive AC knowledge?
    • Mine is in the shop for the AC now. While it did get cold after a bit, it would take a while to even start to cool the air at all. Turns out the compressor was bad and cycling.
    • I call B.S. when I first moved to Texas my first house would only cool to 80 with the Texas heat. The AC tech said it was normal at 100 degrees outside. I remodeled the house put in a new AC. I could hang meat. My cars may need recirculating to start. Once moving it switches to regular AC and I could hang meat. Living in Texas no one would put up with only 20 degrees difference.
    • AC in home or auto only cool down 15-25 degrees from outside temp, but what will help is to put the ac in recirc mode this will recirc the Inside cabin air rather then trying to cool down the outside hot air, I always have mine in recirc mode.
    • Found the fix for this.  Untightan the bolt just below top linkage on the steering column, turn assembly left to reduce space between the two linkage rods at the steering column, tighten bolt.  Made a big improvement.
