Advent Oem-style Navigation Installed!

1. Yes, my camera is currently not working, and the car is still there.

2. Supposedly you can, but it won't work for me. As soon as I disable the "phone" connection, the Bluetooth connection is dropped all together. YMMV...

Hey guys, another question during my shopping, sorry for being a pest ;)

1) If you DON'T have a rear view camera installed, do you still get the little picture of the 'car' on the screen that shows the backup sensors going off?

2) Can you retain the factory bluetooth phone (turning the function off on the OGM1) however still stream music wirelessly to the unit? Or is it all-or-nothing?

1) The car icon looks like it will remain - they're not giving us a way to remove it... :- (

2) This is completely dependent on your phone's Bluetooth section. You might try multiple friends phones to see which have the options to maintain separate connections for Hands-Free and A2DP.

I just finished installing the Advent OGM1 that I got from Walt at www.adcmobile.com . The installation went smooth. Walt was very helpful and a pleasure to work with.

I was using a Rosen, and I was not happy with the bluetooth sound quality. He told be that the Advent would be way better and he was right.

The Advent Bluetooth is light years ahead of the Rosen's. AD2P implementation is just way better for a few reasons.

1. Phonebook transfer. Works on Android and my wife Blackberry.

2. Voice Dial button (Works great if you name you contacts properly in your phone)

3. When streaming pandora music then taking or making a call. When the call ends, AD2P streaming continues without having to touch anything. (Rosen did not)

4. Call quality for the other side is reported to be way better than the Rosen. Rosen had a terrible echo. Even with other phones.

I would also recommend purchasing from Walt. The information he has and the support he provides is awesome.

Now I am going to get a rear camera. I am going with Walt's recommendation with out any doubt.

I just ordered my rear camera tailgate kit from Walt as well! Looking forward to it showing up!

I've been following this post for quite some time now...GREAT INFORMATION!!! I'd like to thank everyone for helping my wife and I make the decision to buy 2 of these units for our vehicles. It looks like this unit is awesome and cant wait to order them.

I do have a question though. Walt, I believe you mentioned that in the new firmware the R.Camera switching is done automatically. Does this mean the camera 12vdc supply wire coming from the OGM1 (reverse trigger) become useless?

Neither of our vehicles were pre-wired for the rear camera. I recently added the oem camera's and bezels to both our vehicles. The oem camera uses 5-6vdc. 12vdc is converted in the rear camera module that is located under the passenger seat. Since I didn't want to pay the ridiculous price of the oem camera module I made one myself (see pic).

Long story short, when I put the vehicle in reverse I need a 12vdc source from the radio. According to the advent installation manual there is a BLUE (reverse trigger) wire coming from the radio that would provide this 12vdc. If the new firmware changes how the camera is triggered, does it still provide 12vdc through the BLUE (reverse trigger) wire when the vehicle is put in reverse?

I'll make it even easier - when you wire your camera, wire it to ignition or accessory power (available at the left I/P junction block - under the black cover to the left of the brake pedal - see below), then when the deck sees reverse through the LAN, it switches automatically to reverse input where the camera is already on and the video is nice and stable. You can try wiring it to the reverse light circuit (also shown below), but since the Advent triggers so quickly, we've found that most cameras aren't stabilized yet and you get some video nastiness for a second or so before it cleans up)

Keep in mind that there is no output power at the radio harness other than constant 12v (yellow wire on Advent harness) - the reverse wire in that harness is an non-functional INPUT wire that used to be used to get the reverse trigger (it was there before they changed it to LAN sensing and they just never removed it), and the ACC wire is only for firing the unit up on the bench - there's no ACC wire at the radio hole at all.

Walt, thanks for the quick response and information. Do you think there would be a concern with the camera powered continuously? I'm not opposed to going this route but the only problem I see is the camera will be on constantly which could shorten the life of the camera.

Maybe this would be perfectly fine, just wondering.

Thanks.

If it's a quality camera, there should be no problem, but your mileage may vary...

I agree with you there. The camera should be fine.

One other question, and I'm sure it's been asked so I apologize if this is a repeat. I noticed that you are able to watch a movie if the vehicle is in Park. Is there a way around this? I would like the rest of the family to be able to watch a dvd on the rear aftermarket screens that are still in the box (need to be installed of course). I'm thinking that the blue/white wire (Park ground) could be grounded out elsewhere, right?

just finished my install last night and it went pretty smooth and so far im happy with it. my only issue was the gps antenna and trying to get my bit mits into the dash. i ended up having to pull the clips all the way across, and it was still tight. it didnt help that the antenna had tape on it getting stuck to everything as i tried to squeeze it in there.

my only gripes are the startup time and presets. if every radio took this long to start up, i probably wouldnt know any difference. but, i like to turn my key and hear music as im used to. as far as the presets, my stock radio and my wifes stock nav allow you to mix xm with fm in any order. i listen to both country and rock, so i can have my xm/fm country grouped and same for rock. it seems that theres no way to do this and theres no way to change the source with the steering wheel. again, stock allows you to move from your first page of presets into the second with the steering wheel.

other than that, it seems great. maybe a firmware update can clear up the preset issue if enough people are wanting it. i have a feeling most listen to either xm or fm, i just happen to listen to both. and i dont think anything can change the boot time. maybe ill be suprised though.

big thanks to walt for the videos. it made things much easier.

I have been following this thread for awhile and think I'm ready to call walt and order a unit but still hung up on a few things.

I have factory Nav with Bose but no DVD option on 2007 NBS CC truck.

Has anyone bought the Advent and camera back-up system complete from ADC? What price for the complete package? I'm trying to get $1100.00 for everything shipped. I want to have a really good camera and after reading the post and their site there is not much on the specs of the unit they sell. From what I understand the CCD units are the best for clarity.

Also I have a PAC OEM1 adapter installed in my truck which ties into the factor harness behind the head unit. It gives me amp-on power and RCA's which I have for a single amp and sub in the back. I was told this was the best way since I have the bose amp and sub from the factory.

I know the Advent comes with an RCA out in one harness but would prefer to leave all the factory speakers and harness intact and just keep using my PAC adapter unless someone tells me otherwise.

I assume the best way is to call Walt and try and work a deal for an Advent and camera package for the price I have seen some of you getting here.

The only real thing I'm hung-up on is boot time delay and black warning bar on back-up screen. I want the camera specifically for hooking up my jet ski trailer and it looks like the warning bar blocks the hitch area which is my target. I have also grown accustomed to using my favorites seek option on the factory Nav. I do like to seek through FM, AM and XM in my presets without changing source. I read one other person mention this isn't an option with the Advent.

My other choice is a GM lock pick GMX550 which cost a lot less and ties into factory nav. This would allow me to view the back-up camera going down the road to check my trailer and skis behind me on occasion on the hwy, not just in reverse. From my understanding the Advent is reverse triggered only through the LAN. No way to view camera via "rear DVD" link or some other source on the Advent?

Anyway, thanks for all your input and postings on here about the Advent, it really helps in the decision making process.

honestly i don't know why anyone would want to replace a factory nav with an aftermarket one unless your looking to get a better mapping system or want it to change up the sound system to aftermarket speakers and subs. it sounds like it is more economic for you to get the backup camera and have it tie into your factory nav.

i thought about actually putting the advent in the wifes yukon and installing her stock nav in my silverado. the main reason for the swap is that the stock nav function sucks, and the advent igo is MUCH!! better. since we use her vehicle for trips, it made sense. but, the startup time is a huge turn off for me, and it is for her as well. she would never consider swapping me after experiencing a few startups. i kept hearing 10 sec which didnt seem all that bad. but i timed it on 3 different startups and got 25 sec, 17 sec and 15 sec. thats pretty unaccpetable in my book. on top of that, it takes the actual nav program about another 10 secs to load and mine doesnt do it automatically. meaning, every time im driving and switch to nav i have to wait for it to load. i thought about some ways around it; remote start? doesnt work because the radio isnt turned on with RS. what about turning the key and then buckling the kids in? doesnt work either because the vehicle shuts down all systems to give more juice to the starter. this means that if you had the radio playing with just the ign or acc circuit on and then started the vehicle, you have to wait for it to reboot. unfortunately, i dont think firmware could ever fix this. i would hope maybe they could change the boot sequence to get the radio playing while the display loaded, but i dont think its possible.

in addition, we both love the radio setup of the stock unit much more than the advent. 30 mixed presets stock vs the 12 fm and 18 xm that cannot be mixed and must be accessed with 5 different source menus that cant be changed with steering wheel controls (source cant be changed, presets can). not a huge deal and i may find a way to like it, its just different than what i expected. it seems they should have designed it to function as a stock unit. i dont see any advantage to have the presets setup like they do. and i dont see any increase in sound quality with the advent. in fact, i think my quality went down. ive played with the eq a bunch and just cant get it right. i have a few coworkers who thought i had already installed a sub when they heard the stock system. it wasnt great, especially at freeway speed with the windows down, but it was bearable. it seems like its all over the place now and i seem to have lost the low end punch. i do have a powered sub on the way and am probably going to swap out the factory fronts with a set of focal components that i have waiting to be installed in my chevelle project.

so is the advent worth it? i still think so. i dont know that im going to keep xm, so that issue may resolve itself. plus, a stock USED nav was going to cost as much or more, and then it was going to be a few hundred more for a lock pick. its insane that you have to pull over for a passenger to input anything into the stock unit. advent did it right on this. the sound should be able to be solved with a cheap set of components and a powered sub. i'll keep you guys updated on my progress.

I completely agree with this statement! Not sure why this unit takes so long to boot-up. I've never seen any aftermarket unit respond the same. Thats my biggest gripe with the OGM-1.

Well, I actually went ahead and ordered mine. Should be here today and ready for install once I grab the beers.

I hear what you're saying about not knowing why anyone would change their factory nav for an aftermarket.

Can't speak for anyone else but I will tell you why I did. (or am later today)

I am pulling my factory nav out along with factory antenna and the GM map and will sell on Ebay. It will probably sell for 600.00 +.

So basically for $400.00 more I will get a back up camera, which I didn't have. A DVD player, which I didn't have, Bluetooth which I didn't have and medialink for my iphone 4s...which I didn't have. So for me these are all valuable and cheaper than buying a new truck to get them, which I did contemplate.

Not to mention noticeably better sound from my bose speakers which many have claimed it provides.

And when you add the iGo mapping which without question is better then GM's antiquated system I think it makes sense, again for me it does.

So for a little money and a little sacrifice of my time of about 25 seconds for boot-up I'm good with the trade-offs.

My truck has 3000+ hours of run time on it, I'll give up some minutes or even hours of boot-up time for 2900 hours of better of everything else.

It all really depends on the person and what "factory nav" they currently have.

Having said all that if I had a 2010+ LTZ verses my 2007 then my nav would have bluetooth, camera, medialink and DVD and like you I wouldn't see why on earth I would swap for an aftermarket unit. But for now I still have a 2007 so this unit seems to be the best of the aftermarket units.

When I wake up tomorrow I will have all these things I have been missing and still no truck payment, perspective is everything.

Thanks again for all the input and advice.

Cheers

Danny
