Extended Warranty Question

Not sure where the correct place is to post this, but I have a question about purchasing an extended warranty on our 2008 Yukon Denali.

The 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty is about to expire, and we're thinking about purchasing another one through a different dealership.

However, I don't want to make the same mistake I made with my '05 Altima. I purchased an extended warranty and NEVER used it. In all honesty, the car is just great and we've never had any major problems with it. So, we basically pissed away $2000 on an extended warranty we never used on our '05 Altima.

I've been told that the 100,000k (5yrs) warranty on the Denali covers all major engine issues, and that the Denalis' are really built to last. So, all the internal stuff like our navigation and DVD player, along with the air conditioning, heater....will last and we "most" likely won't have any problems, which is what the extended bumper to bumper covers.

What is everyone's recommendations?

Is it worth it to purchase the extended bumper to bumper warranty?

Thanks!

I bought the 84 Mo. / 70k Mi. / $100 Deductible GMCC Major Guard (http://www.gmprotectionplan.com/majorguard.html) for my truck because:

  • it's my first American car/truck, and I was concerned about long-term longevity of some of the expensive parts
  • I bought an extended warranty for my wife's 2006 Toyota RAV4, which just paid to replace the entire steering rack ($2,200)
  • I didn't have one on my old Toyota Land Cruiser, which started belching blue smoke at start up - right after the warranty ran out. Luckily, my dealer went to bat for me, managed to get Toyota to cover it, and saved me a *ton* of money
  • if you sell your vehicle, you can get a pro-rated refund on the unused amount

There's just too much electronic crap on vehicles today for me to take a chance. You? I can't say...

The Denali isn't built any different or better than the other fullsizes. I intend to add the extended warranty to mine and would recommend the same to anyone who plans on keeping their truck. Especially the Denali with all the gadgets they have.

I would buy it. We bought the Gm major guard for our 2007 Tahoe. Didn't think we would need it either until Friday evening when the bcm computer fried and the thing wouldn't do nothing. Had it towed to the dealership only cost $110 for everything. Versus close to a $1000 without the warranty. In my opinion it's worth it

Thanks for the feedback.

My wife does want to do it afterall, she said it would be piece of mind, and I've heard that if something goes out like the navigation or anything electrical, it could cost a fortune to repair.

how long do you intend on keeping the vehicle?

if you only plan to keep it 3 years or less, i don't think it would be worth it. if you plan to have it more than 3 years, then its probably worth it.

before your current warranty is up, go get all the wear and tear things fixed on it. the bumper to bumper covers everything! my wife's leather armrest had a very small tear in it (from the dumbass that installed the tint), and the dealership fixed it at no charge and the description said "the stitching was coming apart" which wasn't really the case.

You will always need a warranty when you decided not to get one. There is no way of knowing whether you will utilize it or not.

I just purchased a 2006 1500HD in December. Purchased the extended powertrain warranty. After looking into problems the 6.0 motor has with broken exhaust manifold bolts, I looked at my manifolds and 2 bolts are broken on the drivers side, and the passenger side has a crack in the manifold. While my mechanic looked at it, he noticed that the front seals are leaking as well. All covered under the warranty. I will not have the dealership do the work, I have a friend who owns a really good shop here in town and I know the job will be done right.

I am glad that I purchased the warranty for mine. You just never know when you might need it. I would recommend getting the longest coverage that you can. In most cases these vehicles are solid, but if something is going to happen to it, usually at the higher mileage.
