Crew Vs Extended Power

Recommended Posts

Between a Crew cab and Extended Cab, is there enough difference between the two that the Crew Cab doesn't feel as powerful as the extended and/or MPG is different? I've always thought I'd get a Crew 6.2l, but now that the time is coming, I'm thinking I'll be going with the 5.3l with whatever I get. Thanks.

The 6.2L is an AWESOME motor in the crewcab coupled with the 3.73's gears. I'm getting 14-19mpg out of mine. Thats very close to the mileage of the 5.3L but a whole lot more fun to drive. :)

But to answer your question, there is a weight difference obviously between the crew and extedned cabs, so apples to apples, the extended cab will do better.

There is not a huge weight difference. They both use the same chasis and drivetrain. They both have rear seats and rear doors. But everything rear seat related is an extra 6" or so on the CC. This is taken away from the bed. So the CC's cab is slightly heavier and the bed is slightly lighter compared to the EC. While there is a weight difference. It is not as much as you might think.

Get the 6.2 and don't look back! :)

That is easier said than done for some as gas prices continue to climb.

According to the Chevy website 2011 EC Standard Bed LT - 5,368 lbs curb weight, CC short Bed LT 5,418 lbs curb weight, both 4WD.

True, but I know a couple guys that are getting just as good gas mileage with the 6.2 as guys I know with the 5.3 (18-19)

city or highway?

I have seen 22mpg highway with my 5.3. But from some reports short trip mileage seems to be about the same until you start sitting still at redlights and drive thru's.

Driving styles should also be considered. You can grandpa a 6.2 around to get good mileage. What is the fun in all that power if you baby it to get good mileage? I drive my 5.3 just about however I want and see 16mpg all around. If I baby it and be pretty selective about what roads I take to get somewhere I can average 18mpg overall. But I do not always have time to take the effecient road to town.

I bet I would be lucky to average 13 -14mpg with my driving style and normal routes. Right now I average around 16-16.5mpg with the 5.3. In the winter it drops to 14.5 -15mpg.

Oh thats highway,Funny you mention 22 with your 5.3,The one guy I know had an '09 Sierra SLT crew-cab 4x4 w/the 5.3 and 3.42 gears,he averaged 21/22 highway back and forth to work,he just bought an '11 Silverado crew-cab 4x4 off of us w/the 6.2 and 3.42 gears and he's averaging 19/20 with it.

He said he's happy to lose a few mpg's for the power of the 6.2!

Just to throw this out. Last few tanks of E85

2008 Tahoe 2wd 3.42 rear end 5.3L 12.5 mpg

2010 Silverado 4wd 3.42 rear end 6.2L - 11.5 mpg

*about 80% city*

Having the 2 motors (yes in different vehicles) I wouldnt consider the 6.2 any more of a gas hog from what I see. Comapring my 2010 to my old 2000 I get better milage out of the 2010 with the bigger motor (6.2 vs 5.3). This made me exstatic

A close friend has the 6.2 and he reports good mpg. I have to admit it makes me drool a little at the thought of more power for nearly the same economy. And more than anything it makes me wonder what mpg I would get if my 5.3 6 speed would get if it had 3.73's.

But my whole point is that as gas prices keep climbing, the drool factor is less and less even at a difference of merely 1mpg. 1mpg is not much @ $3.25/gallon, but as gas goes above $4/gallon, people will be searching for ways to get 1mpg improvements. But this is coming from a guy that hates buying gas.

You can't get the 3.73's without getting the 6.2L and max trailer package. They don't offer it in the 5.3L. The deepest gear you can get is the 3.42's :)

For the small mileage difference, there was no reason not to get it in my book.

LOL....I know. But GM cannot stop me from wondering if it would be more effecient with 3.73's. I mean the 6.2 gets pretty good mileage, and I think it is a result of how it is geared. The 3.73's seem to be a good combo with the 6l80. And I wonder how effecient the 5.3 would be with that combo. I think it would hold 4cyl mode longer with that gear ratio which should more than compensate for slightly higher rpm's. I am in no way going to switch ratio's, but it is free to think about it.

1 to 2 mpg is enough for me to settle for the 5.3 liter. Especially considering the driving styles I suspect I would have to adopt to make the mileage comparable. I mean the 5.3 is not exactly underpowered. It is only underpowered when compared to the 6.2.

Your right, the 5.3L is a very good motor :) Just throwing it out there so your not kicking yourself later... Everytime I've settled or figured I could "get away with it" It cost me more in the end..
