Another Problem Now

2002 sierra 1500 98k

Just got towed with this thing twice, ended up needing a new fuel pump. I replaced it and it now runs fine. two days after that I get the service engine soon light. Scanned it and got a PO440 code-EVAP emission control system malfunction... what direction to I go in to find this problem?

thank you

yep, an EVAP code following a fuel pump replacement means bring it back to whoever did it and make them fix it. something came loose or has a bad seal.

well I did the pump myself. The ring was a pita but I know it went all the way on. I also had to put a new wire harness on it. It had come with the kit. I will wait until the tank level drops and do it again.

Honestly... I'm not very pleased with GMC products. I had two vans prior and both cost me a ton of money in repairs and blown engines. I've run my Fords to 300k with just minimual maintenance. I bought this to cause it was very clean and ran good. Seems to tow okay and is more comfortable to drive on the highways than the Ford. But two months into this thing and I've already got $2000 in repairs and its left me stuck twice. Put all new brakes on....rotors and pads, and they sound horrible...squeak and groan. The parts store replaced all of them again for me and still the same thing.... sorry guys just venting a bit. Hopefully this will get better since I rely on the truck for my living..... for some reason I guess I just have bad luck with them.

Gm fuel pumps are a terrible thing lol...I dunno why they cant make one that lasts. The check engine light will have something to do with the install, weather the pump isnt seated right, you wrecked a quick connect or a hose clamp was left loose or a hose was torn. Brakes are a maintenance thing, they wear out and make noise on every vehicle no matter what make. That being said, new brakes shouldnt be grinding and squealing, that would have to be an install problem as well.

Sorry your having issues but Ford quality sucks compared to GM. If Fords were so great, there would still be a lot of them on the road after 15+ years. I mean after all, they claim to sell more than GMC & Chevy & Dodge, however it has been proven time and time again that GM trucks are the longest lasting most dependable out there. I always see tons more older GM Trucks out there compared to Ford and Dodge.

I couldn't believe when I saw the whole pump was plastic. The 4 wire connector is the one that had to get modified to the new style. They give you crimp lugs with it that are junk. I had used the solder type connectors instead. Figured it would be best since it was going over the tank.

As far as the brakes.....straight forward install....rotors and pads. The problem I believe is the quality of the parts. I replace tons of brakes over the years and have never had these types of noises coming from the afterwards.

I hear some guys rant an rave about the GM products and thats fine. I've got 2 corvettes and absolutely love them and have done a ton of modifications to one of them.

Unfortunetly when it comes to the trucks thats where I've been prone to have bad luck.

My comparsions of the Fords to GM

F150 and F350.

Interiors were solid and held up over time

Brakes are an issue, along with tie rod ends.

Rougher ride on the highways

Never been towed off the highway

Both vehicles I owned for 4 years and put over 300,000 on both.

Sold both for more than $5000 when done

GMC

Van 1500 and a 3500,

Interiors don't feel solid. Arm rests tore off. Exterior trim loosens up

Shocks,Brakes, misfire issues

Rides nice on the highway

I can remember each one has been towed more than twice off the highway

Both trucks at approx 150000 had major engine issues,

Sold both as parts trucks for less than $2k

Now I have the GMC sierra 1500 and it doesn't even have 100k on it yet and its given me problems already.

All these trucks I run between Albany to NYC weekly. Its nothing for me to put 10k miles on in a month.

Each get oil changes and fluid checks every 1500 miles. If the truck sits/breaks down its not making me any money and effects service to my customers so its important that they are running. Like I said before it just been my experience so far, that it seems I have bad luck with them. I bought this at a great price and am hoping that I can get a few years out of it.

I got up under this again.

Connection from fuel inlet to tank is nice and tight

Feed and Return lines in front of the tank are nice and tight. don't see any obvious leaks

the 3 connections that I had off to whatever this controller is in front of the tank is nice and tight

Fuel pump electrical connections are nice and tight

what is the 4 wire connection for that goes to the pump?

the 3 lines that connection to the top of the fuel pump are tight and not leaking

The pump seal ring is still nice and tight and not leaking

What else should I be looking for?

or do I just drop the tank and re set that pump?

thanks

The pump itself isnt plastic. It is metal and sits inside the plastic housing which is to keep some amount of fuel around it and it houses the fuel guage sender. if all of your hoses and lines look good, you may have to pull the pump out and make sure the big o-ring for the pump didnt tear or fold in during install(They are a bitch to get in and can happen fairly easily). If after all that you cant find the problem you may have to take it to a shop and have them smoke test it to find the leak.

This all being said, i sure hope you didnt leave your gascap loose which is causing it. I would make sure no rubber lines got torn in the process either. And before dropping the tank again, I would make sure your gas cap is tight and get the code cleared and see if it comes back on.

I've had the gas cap on and off several times. But I'm more than willing to go threw all the hoses again prior to any removal.

What actually causes the code? Is it caused by the introduction of more air into the fuel system?

Wondering if maybe it would help if I had a better understanding to exactly what the code means.

thanks for your help and advice

The gas cap needs to always be on and snug when the truck is in operation. The fuel system is pressurized and if it detects a loss in pressure it will throw that code and the light may stay on for a few days even after you have addressed the problem, unless you clear the code out with a scan tool. (Disconnecting the battery won't always do it)

Well went through the lines again today, double checked the gas cap. In a weeks time I have that on/off about 8 times. Cleared the code with the scan tool. I've only put about 10 miles on it today but I'll have to wait and see if it goes on again.

I appreciate the responses and help. thanks
