I want to do oil change on my tranny and inspect it. How to i identify the tranny to get the right filter and fluid, and how MUCH fluid too. I dont know if I have an Allison or not, I do know it has 17 bolts and it's rectangular pan.

Also want to do change on transfer case fluid as well, same thing....how do i find out whats there. I know the capacities from the manual.

thanks

Do you have a 6.0 or an 8.1 gas motor? If you have the 6.0, you have the 4L80 transmission, and most likely the NVG 263 transfercase. The 8.1 has the Allison. Being a "manual" transfer case (as in no Autotrac) you should put Dexron 3 or your dealer should have GM Manual Transmission and Transfer Case fluid (thats what the bottle says on it). Should be red. The blue stuff is Autotrac. As for the transmission, Dexron 6 is what you would use.

4L80E is the automatic transmission paired with the 6.0. Its just the way GM names them. 4 means its a 4 speed, L is for longitudinal (rwd) 80 is the rated capacity (?) I think and E means its electronically controlled. And yes, the filter is in the pan. If you had the Allison, you would have both an internal pan filter and an external filter.

As for Autotrac, 2500hd trucks do not have it, and to my knowledge, never have. The autotrac transfer cases are found in Z71 1500 trucks, Tahoes and 1500 Suburbans, and I believe it may have been something accessible on 1500hd when they were made.

Per GM, both electronically shifted and manually shifted transfer cases are "manual" in that they cannot "automatically" engage 4wd on their own.

You were able to get the Auto-trac unit in the 01 to 04

GM 2500 LDs !

You have a 06 so prob. a NVG/NPG 263

More specifically, it should be a 263HD. There should be a round tag screwed to the back half case on the bottom that has model and S/N info on it. Looks like the attachment.
