Group Targets Car Pollution Via Ads

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Car buyers in four states will soon hear a religious appeal to their environmental conscience: "What would Jesus drive?"

A Pennsylvania-based environmental group is planning television advertising in North Carolina, Iowa, Indiana and Missouri to urge consumers to park their pollutive SUVs — Jesus would prefer a cleaner auto, the group contends.

"Economic issues are moral issues. There really isn't a decision in your life that isn't a moral choice," said the Rev. Jim Ball, executive director of the Evangelical Environmental Network, which is sponsoring the "What Would Jesus Drive?" campaign.

The Wynnewood, Pa.-based group will begin running television ads this month in eight cities to urge consumers to park their sport-utility vehicles and to buy fuel-efficient cars. The ads contend that the devout ought to consider the SUVs' effect on the earth.

But it's a small voice in a sea of SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks — last year they accounted for half the new vehicles sold in the United States. The average fuel economy for all 2003 model cars and passenger trucks dropped to 20.8 miles per gallon, reflecting what automakers and many buyers say is a higher priority on comfort and family needs than conserving gasoline.

Automakers say they'd be happy to sell more fuel-efficient vehicles if that's what Americans wanted to drive.

"If people would be demanding tailfins on cars, we'd be making tailfins on cars. But people aren't demanding tailfins," said Eron Shosteck, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a coalition of 13 companies that produce most of the country's vehicles. "People want power. Consumers want power."

Ball and a network of like-minded mainline Christians and Jews hope to alter those buying habits.

Global warming (news - web sites) and smoggy air worsened by vehicle exhausts threaten the health of humans, plants and animals worldwide, and the faithful are called to preserve God's creation, Ball said in a telephone interview.

"We think he is Lord of our transportation choices as well as all our other choices," said Ball, an ordained American Baptist minister. "When you need a new car, you should buy the most fuel-efficient one that truly meets your needs."

Please stop the insanity  :D

Correct me if I'm wrong but Jesus can walk on water, right?

And he's spreading a mesage and it would defeat the purpose to drive a car when you have to take such short trips to give the word, wouldn't it?

So if he was here and that enviromentally conscious he would realize that short trips and starting the car and turning it off if not economical since he is a smart guy so the answer is:There is now answer. It's a trick question.

Some people just have way too much time on their hands.

Hey did you ever see a man of god drive anything but the biggest Caddy, or Lincon out there.

Ironic, eh?

Would Jesus actually own a car?

doesn't he have to give up all worldly possessions?

Maybe lifted to aid in some water driving/walking.

Jesus would HAVE to drive a big pickup... he'd need something big enough to run over all those Enviro-Nazis!  I mean, try running over their green a**'s with a Camry and not needing 1000 of repairs.

We ran this stupid story at the station I work.

I think Jesus would drive a Suburban. Gotta haul around the 12 Apostles. And gas milage would'nt be an issue. Heck, if He can turn water into wine, He can surely turn water into gas.  :P

I love it when people try to hide behind Jesus or anyone else to try and push there ideas.

So they think J.C. would drive a civic. Sounds pretty crazy. They had better be careful. You know the Branch Davidians had some crazy ideas. We all know what Reno did to them.

Globel warming is a serious problem. Did you know that in the last 100 yrs. the average temp. has jumped almost a full degree farenheit.   Give me a break.

Anyone who believes in Global Warming has never spent a winter in Montana.

Plus, where were these idiots when we were coming out of the ice age 10,000 years ago whining about mammoth farts causing the earth to get warmer!

    • The filtering to wear relationship goes like this:      'Relative Engine Life "Factor" new divided by the factor old. So 8/3= 2.67. That result is the multiplier thus if a motor had an effective life of 100K using a filter with a 45 micron rating at a Beta ratio of 75 then a filter with a micron rating of 10 at a Beta of 75 would improve expected engine life to 267,000 miles.    Wear metals are an indirect indicator. Less is better and the motor lives longer but there isn't a multiplier like there is for filtration so well documented. Most of that has to do with the sensitivity of the wear metals tests themselves. The read a 'slice' of the spectrum but not the absolute values for the entire spectrum. So a general indicator that is used WITH the results of other tests. Two others considered in this post.    There is also the influence of corrosive wear which may be seen in the wear metals but separate from load based or viscosity mitigated indication. It's a small graph but the gray line is wear vs the TBN/TAN crossover. Not as useful as it used to be as there are now new chemistries for acid remediation that don't show up in standard UAO testing. They will catch up or be found liars. Only two possible outcomes, eh?
    • One thing that comes up over and over is that the torque converters are the weak link. Many of the failed transmissions have the same thing in common. The torque converter grenades and then metal torque converter shards end up destroying the transmission. One of the best things you can do is if your transmission is still fully functional, change out to one of the aftermarket billet torque converters. There are several good choices mentioned in different threads here to make your choice. After that, then you can decide about trans tuning. My trans failed at around 95,000 miles. It got replaced under the GM protection plan. The remanufactured trans comes with a 100,000 mile /3 year warranty. I still have just under 1 year left. So far, so good. As long as it's still working good next year, an aftermarket torque converter is going to get installed early spring. If the trans and OEM torque converter fail by then, I will get it replaced under warranty and immediately have an aftermarket torque converter installed. A warranty replacement trans of a replacement trans will no longer have the warranty so I will bulletproof it from the get go.
    • You got'a be cooking right now. Just looked at the weather map. Yuck!    We are right back to $4 today.
    • Pushing $4.00 a gallon in most places, still $3.75 in town but it's going to spike tomorrow for sure.   Diesel back up to $4.60-5.00.
    • I really appreciate the response.  I guess I was confused about torque angle vs torque angle yield.  The individual bolts don't have a warning on reuse but the part number for the LCA nuts does.   Regarding the purpose of the moog grease fittings on their bolts .. Guessing to reduce possibility of corrosion locking the cams or seizing to the bushing inserts.
