Tire Pressure Different Then On The Placard?

Hi Folks,

I have a 2008 Silverado LT2 with the optional Goodyear 275 55/20 LS-2 tires on the touring sport rims. The placard on the door says 30psi for the tires. All the time at the dealer I bought it from during service they would fill to 32 or 33 on the spec sheet they give you. It would drop to 29-30 in the morning which is when you should match the door's PSI rating.

Well these tires are supposed to be good for 60,000; and now at 35,450 they show bad wear on the shoulders. I had folks asking me if I was rotating my tires and I said yes, at the proper intervals at the dealer. This last month when I took it in to service, I didn't mention this at all.

When I picked it up, the tech had filled each tire to 38psi. I asked the manager why this was, as before it was set to 32psi. He said he didn't know, just that they set them to the pressure on the door. The tech had left already as I picked up the truck late.

Well, I checked the door and again, it had not changed, it said 30psi. For the first time I checked the tire and it said 44psi MAX. no recommended cold, just max.

So what I am wondering is if the door sticker is wrong for the tires I bought with my truck, and for almost three years I have been wearing them down 25% faster then I should have. Seems a tech noticed the tire wear and raised the pressure.

If this is the case, I am honked off at paying for the expensive optional tires from the factory, and the extra hazard insurance on them; only to have [old] GM put the wrong settings on the placard, and the dealer set them to the wrong setting for more then 2 years making them wear out.

I seriously doubt the tires are good for 60k, where did you read that?

Well, that is what the finance sales guys said when selling me the tire hazard "insurance". Yes I know, I should look up the spec, 6 years so that was probably "extrapolated" by the guy to be miles at 10K per year. But again, the key in the thread depth. I notice that NO tread life warranted is provided, so you probably are right that they would not last that long.

["6 Years / Free replacement first year or 2/32" of wear, then prorated until 2/32" remaining depth"]

But at the moment, I am concerned that I should be running the higher pressure instead of what the door says.

I had a set of those tires and ran 44 lbs. pressure in them all the time for maximum rolling performance. They were good for 50,000 miles.

I have ran mine at 30-32 psi, and they made 39,000 before being replaced. I now have 25,000 on the replacements (Cooper Discoverer HT Plus) and it looks like I may get about the same wear out of them.

My buddy at the tire store, who also happens to own a GM truck with 20's, has told me that for the money, the Goodyears aren't that bad. The Michelins are at least double the price, and will not get quite double the mileage.

Thanks, that is what I think it will end up being with mine. Once I return from this 2K mile trip I think I will need to replace them.

I could be wrong but the door placard is what the vehicle manufacturer recommends for comfort and handling. the tire info is what the tire manufacturer says is the maximum you should use. As long as your somewhere in between those 2 settings you'll be fine. I run mine around 34-35psi. If you have no alignment issues, excessive wear on both edges of a tire indicates too little air pressure and excessive wear in the middle of the tire indicates too much air pressure

Those Goodyear LS2 tires are crap. No idea why GM puts them on a 4WD truck other than they are cheap. I have 6K on mine and have noticed some wear on the edges when running them at 30 psi so I bumped them up this weekend as well. Hopefully, they will wear better now and give me 40K out of them (if I'm lucky). On the other hand, I'd love to burn them off and get some Cooper Zeons or Toyo A/T tires.

dealers are required to check and fill the tires to the C.A.R.B. regulations (at least here in CA) I have to always remind the service writer to make a note not to mess with mine, I like them at 36 psi, and they want to have them @ 30 psi.. it's rather annoying.. if I didn't ask you to f--k with something, then don't, just fix what I ask you too.

This is actually quite simple. The pressure on the side of the tire said some max weight number at some air pressure. Does not just say an air pressure number. The manufacturer wants to have a nice ride, so they drop the pressure to give a nice ride. What is missing is what weight you can put on that tire at 30 psi. The lower the air pressure, the less weight you can carry. More weight will increase the temp of the tire. The more the sidewall flexes, the hotter the tire gets. Take a small piece of copper and bend it back and forth with your hands, not how hot the copper gets at the point it is flexing just before it breaks. The tire does the same thing,

What you are seeing is exactly what Ford/Firestone ran into a few years ago. Ford said 25 psi, and Firestone said 35psi. Tires blew out in hot climates. GM is putting a pressure on the placard that will give you the best ride, and the best mileage combination that they can come up with, we only have to hope that they actually know what the tire manufacturer think of this pressure.
