6.2 Camshaft

Has anybody got any suggestions or experience with putting a cam in their 6.2. I was looking at the GM performance stage 2 cam. From the specs that I've found it looks like the cam out of the Camaro.

My truck already has Dynatech long tubes and high flow cats. Cold air to come and a tune after I make up my mind about the cam.

There's way better custom cams out there. Talk to a performance shop about spec'ing you a cam.

What kind of benifits or gains would come from an upgraded cam? How would the drivability be affected? I have considered one for my truck if it would be worth the price.

If you choose a cam thats perfect for your needs you wont have any driveability issues whatsoever you will just make a LOT more power. If you retain VVT you wont lose any down low either. Theres been a TON of VVT cam development going on the past year mainly because the new Camaro 6.2L comes with VVT if you get an auto. There were VVT truck cams before but the truck performance market is small compared to the go fast crowd with cars so there has been a lot of ground gained recently. For instance the worlds fastest stock bottom end 6.2L Camaro uses a VVT cam. As for above comments re 228R thats a cathderal port head cam for older LS engines and wont work very well with a 6.2L and the square port heads they have. Im not saying it wont make power because it will but there are a LOT better grinds and lobes out there nowadays that take full advantage of the huge port flow these L92/LS3 heads have. Anyways heres an old article to give you an idea of what to expect power wise. Take a look at the dyno graph in particular and notice there is NO LOSS of torque down low but major gains up top.

Wow looks like good gains! Truck would be a real sleeper then! This may be an option for me once my warrenty runs out or i stop having fun with the power i already have!

with the combo i told you to get the truck would be the one mean sob.

While I agree it will make good power with that cam its just that theres much better cam options out there nowadays tailored for the square port heads these engines have plus retain VVT which is a power adder. 228R is a proven cam on LS1's but it has its negatives hence the need for a 3600 stall to compensate for that cams misgivings is exactly why VVT is so great. You dont lose anything down low and you dont need to go that big on duration to make killer power. Plus you need more split and wider center to get he most out of these heads. Id go with either the 214/228 EPS or the 218/232 EPS if its a daily driver. In case you didnt know Geoff who owns EPS and is the ONLY company that holds the license for EPS lobes is also the former owner of Thunder Racing who designed the TR224 which is/was arguably the best cam ever made for LS1's and the one everyone else ( like Texas Speed with their 228R ) tried to copy. They are based on old sbc XE lobes which are not ideal for LS1's let alone these new large port heads. Lobe design is key to big power under the curve. That and good tuning and yee hawww look out

Theres more than a few trucks on other boards with a 6.2L EPS cam only running low 12's

Low 12s, wow, thats quick. Wonder how they tow?

Probably not the best as these guys were also running big stalls in the 3500 range. Circle D seems the popular choice for the 6spd autos. A friend of mine runs mid 14's through his stock 6.2 tuned with nittos :) These trucks are quick out of the box

O I know :smash: But nothing wrong with wanting to go faster, but i cant sacrifice drivability for it. I would love to run mine as is, but no tracks around me.
