Spray Paint For Rims?

Recommended Posts

i was recently at the hardware store and found out that rustoleum makes high performance wheel paint thats suppose to halt rust and corrosion and look nice...i currently have steel rims that are showing signs of decay and i'm looking for a decent semi cheap fix aside from buying new wheels or powder coating...i just want to go flat black nothing crazy but i don't want it to look cheesey or cheap and i want it to last....any opinions? experiences"

Ive done it. I would definately suggest using Rustoleum products because they are cheap, but make a really nice end product compared to most other paints on the market. Ive even used it on plastics because of its nice finish.

The key will be prep work. Make sure you get all the old finish off of the wheel face. I suggest media blasting in a cabinet, or using a good quality paint stripper. Once the wheel is clean, you should wash it with a good degreaser, or hot water and Dawn dish liquid works. Then let the wheels dry completely and make sure they are within the temperature specs of the paint (as listed on the can). You dont really need a primer with Rustoleum products, but ite helps make a cleaner finish and helps it hold on longer. I always use a good clean metal primer before topcoating with color. I followed these steps and my wheel paint lasted for 3 years in sand and mud. You can follow with a clear, but its not crutial, especially if you are going with a flat color.

Keep in mind though, I live in Texas so I dont get the winter salt like you northern guys do. Cant tell you how this process works in salty conditions.
