2007 Rear Disc Removal Issue

Hi,

I'm currently trying to change the rotors/pads on my 2007 Silverado 6.0 Max (LTZ, 4.10 rear, front and rear disc). I've gotten the LR off but the RR is not going well. The rotor appears to be stuck on corrosion and hanging up on the parking brake shoe. In other words it rotates easily when fully seated and hangs as soon as I try to pull it off. I can see that there is a rubber plug covering access to a sort-of star adjuster for the shoes. I've tried a small screwdriver (it's at a very shallow angle on the bottom of the adjuster and the teeth are very small so there isn't much to grip) and may be turning it but it is very difficult to tell.

Is there a special tool for releasing the rear parking brake shoes?

Is there a special puller for this that magically makes it easy?

Other things I've tried so far:

Hammering the hell out of the back side of the rotor (sides etc)

Impact hammering the rotor

Using 2 3/8-16 bolts through the tapped rotor holes against the hub in conjunction with the impact hammer (I'll need to clean the face up a bit after removing the rotor)

Prying, cursing, pulling etc

Putting a wheel on the LR and attempting to rotate the corrosion against the shoes, and oscillating it as well which I'm sure the u-joints love, while putting some pressure on it with the 3/8 bolts

These all walk it our a bit but I am not really getting anywhere.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've been through 20 something pages of search and it appears people are beating the rotors into submission. I'm having difficulty coming up with ways to beat this thing harder and not damage something and I don't want to cut it off but am leaning in that direction.

Thanks,

Steve

im glad u r working on brakes without a clue sir ......makes us all feel safe as hell.....

2 tools are required ,1 to hold in the one way rachet arm and 2 ,the brake adjust tool with an angle built in to it to rotate the adjuster till the rotor comes off...

google brake pad adjusters or get a manual .....please

You don't have your parking brake on do you?? I did this before and it took me a while to realize it was engaged.

Govtech,

Your typical forum response notwithstanding thanks for the information. I'll be sure to get the adjustment tool.

And, BlackZ71Silverado, the parking brake is not engaged :fume:
