So we are looking at getting a yellow and chocolate Lab puppy and i wanted to know what you guys prefer gender wise? My family has always had females (a beagle, a lab mix, and two cocker spaniels) but they always ended up being bitches, literally. They would get grumpy and snap and bite at you. The lab mix was really old when she started snapping and had bad arthritis and was also abused before we rescued her. This time im considering a male and i've read a lot of good things and good info about males. Any help you guys have would be great!!

We have a 4 yr old Male Black lab. Been pretty good. He is pretty rambunctious though. Still acts like a puppy.

Every single animal we have ever owned from cats to dogs to horses to guinea pigs have all been males. I always hear people say that females are easier to train, smarter, and not as aggressive as males, but so far it hasn't been true for me. My weim i got now is pretty dam smart and easy to train so i don't know. Btw look into a weimaraner they look like a lab that is grey but are much better all around

i have a chocolate lab female, very affectionate, loves to lay on my lap and follow me. Tried to pick the calmest dog of the litter and i have no regrets for what we have. She is less than a yr old

when we picked up our dog at 8 wks old he grabbed my shoelace and untied it. I knew he was going to be a trouble maker. For the 1st 2 yrs I dont know how we got through it. He was a huge chewer, anything not tied down. He loves wood too.

He loves to cuddle in the fall and winter (thinks he is a lap dog).

female dog and male cats.. then I don't have to worry about the dog trying to hump the cat..

actually I don't like female cats, the 2 my mother has owned have been pissy like bitches.

dogs I don't care, either or, I go by my gut feeling / attraction to the animal and their re-action / attraction to me, and the family..

Oreo our Shepard/Lab mix picked us, she came to us at the pound, she pawed at us, and followed us everywhere and we have a very close bond (she's 15 now)..

I would pick a female dog first but if it was the right dog I would get a male. But all my dogs have been female including my current one. My wife on the other hand would only want a female because she hates to see the red rocket on a male!!!

I prefer females, but I have them fixed so they dont get moody. They seem to be better with kids because of the maternal instincts. Ive got a female American Bulldog now that I resued so she is fixed as well, and she loves my little boy. when we take him outside, she will come over and lick all over him, then sit at his feet and face away from hit to watch for danger.

I had a male black lab growing up that was a litteral beast. 145lbs of shear blac kterror if you didnt "belong" to him (me, my mom and dad, or my sister). He wasnt aggressive, but hew would scare the Sh** out of you when he came out growling and barking. but, once he determined you werent a threat, he was a big ole teddy bear. He never bit or offered to bite ever in his life. He could have been a giant bluff, but I dont know anyone that wanted to challenge that. Possibly the greatest dog I ever had. But, he was territorial, and because males are so territorial, it makes housetraining an extra challenge because they eep wanting to mark their area.

Labs are great and super smart. I house trained my last one in 1 week. But, I have hear that of all of the cases when family pets have turned aggressive on their owners, the male yellow lab has the highest number of incidents. Dont know how accurate this is, but its worth researching to be sure.

I've always been partial to the males. I like the larger size of the males. Also I've always had good luck with the temporments.

Thanks for the help guys! All our females were spayed and still had the mood swings. I have a wife and two daughters and i read that many girls and a female dog can drive their hormones crazy. I'll research that yellow male lab statistic and see if it's true. Our beagle was very territorial and would bite anyone who walked in our yard. We heard beagles were great dogs and she really was but i think the year we had her from a puppy to 1 yrs. old she was treated like a baby till the actual baby came and then she wasn't getting the attention she used to get and that might be why she snapped at my 3 1/2 year old. Any other insight would be great!

I think with the lab breed you can't go wrong with either one you get. Labs are known for being a little hyper as puppies but settle down after a few years ( ours took a little longer, more like 7-8 years) I know a lot has to do with how they are raised but labs just have a rep of being great dogs, very friendly and people orientated.

I have a male Border Collie (7 years old) and two female miniature long haired daschounds. All of them are fixed and good dogs.

My uncle has a female chocolate lab, and she's a real sweet dog. She's well trained since we use her duck hunting. She does try to hump a leg every now and then though.

I'm in the same position. I graduate from college in December, and I'm going to be looking at getting a lab puppy. Got a big decision whether it will be male or female as well.

Love my male German shepherd. My second one. I would only have male dogs. Don't have to get fixed and don't have to worry about bleeding or babies if not fixed.
