first off no this is not my truck, my best friend bought one recently and is looking into trying to remedy the issues the motor is known for before they happen....number one being the egr, hes looking for a good egr delete and is wondering if its worth doing or if its more trouble then its worth...he is not concerned with emissions as military do not get smog tested...any help would be awsome....oh and please no brand bashing, i know this thread is an open invite to ford haters but i don't really know many other truck sites with a good community full of information...

From another forum discussing buying an used Ford 6.0 PSD.

After weeks of researching I have found out this about the 6.0 from many different forums and sites:

1- The ford gold anti freeze has to go with a restore flush. Replace with Cat coolant.

2- The EGR cooler gets deleted.

3- The oil cooler gets replaced with an air cooler.

Average cost to do this $2000

*If you want to chip it and beat the heck out of it you will then need to replace the head bolts. If not, they are fine.

After that you have a motor that is as reliable as any other diesel in a PU. So if you can get a great deal on a 6.0 then an extra $2000 will fix the major problems these motors have and you will have a great truck.

Another poster replied,

I agree on the coolant. Add a coolant filter.

Deleting the EGR is illegal for a shop to do, REPLACING with an aftermarket EGR from BulletProof Diesel is the way to stay legal.

Oil cooler replaced with an AIR cooler? How about the Ford stock OIL cooler gets replaced with a BulletProof aftermarket cooler?

Head bolts are okay so long as the truck hasn't been chipped or the EGR cooler hasn't gone south.

in my case, I have merely added a coolant filter.

What would concern me is the low miles on a six year old truck. I see a sticking unison ring in the turbo due to rust as a possibility. These trucks need to be worked hard and often. This truck has sat unused.

it costs my buddy about 500 bucks for the egr delete kit...well worth it. it will save you thousands in the end...turbo and injectors mainly. fuel sticks can get $$$$$$$$$
