Nitto Terra Grapps In Snow?

i am upgrading my tires and suspension because i like the look but the tires because of snow. last year in jersey we got POUNDED by snow. i work for the local police and getting to work in the snow is a must. last year i made it in no problem, but going home at 4 am was a different story. my truck was stuck in the parking lot and wasnt moving out of the spot with the stockers on. i walked home, it wouldnt have mattered if i got the truck out, my street had an average of 3 1/2 ft of snow down but i still would have liked to get it to the end of my street (the busy road my street is off of was plowed slightly).

 

this year reports are for jersey to get hit harder than last year snow wise. im looking for 305/70r17's, there are 3 tires available: nitto terra grapps, all-terrains (with the kevlar, i forget what theyre called), and maxxis bighorns. i like the terra grapps cuz theyre less expensive than the rest but i also dont want to get terribly stuck again lol. this is jersey afterall, we may not get any snow so i dont want to spend 1600 in tires for it to not snow lol.

 

anyone have any experience with these tires in snow? preferably deep snow? also what kinda life span do these tires have? im looking for something that'll last a long time.

I got maxxis bighorns on my truck and i love them. Last year we got about 4-5 inches of snow and the roads were all frozen over. My bighorns did pretty good in the snow. I tried going up a steep ass hill that was covered in ice in 2wd and it made it about half way which is pretty good when i put it in 4wd it walked right up the hill. And this was a hill i dont think i could of walked up in regular shoes. The bighorns should also be alot cheaper than the terra graps.

the bighorns ive found arent much cheaper. i found on amazon.com they have the terra grapps for 274 with free shipping. ive also heard negative reviews on the bighorns in wet weather and ice. most involving snow said theyre good for moving in loose snow and mud but other than that, theyre not great (this review was a consistent one with ALL mud tires)

 

hows the wear on the bighorns? i'm not looking to replace tires often, these are wayyyy more expensive than the tires im used to replacing on my trans am (back tires only on that )

Got right around 14,000 miles on mine and there holding up pretty good considering all that they've been through. I can get a picture of them with the tread depth at around 14,000ish miles if you want?

If your looking for a tire to go through the snow, a 305 sized tire might not be the best idea. The skinnier the tire the better, a fat tire has to push the snow down to get over it while a skinnier tire can cut through the snow much more easily. My mom has a subaru forester with i believe 235 tires and that will go through snow up to the bumper, I also use to hunt with a 94 dodge cummins with about 700 rear wheel pound feet of tourqe(but thats a different story) and he had very tall 245s i believe on it and that truck would go through as much snow as you wanted.

Do you have a lift or leveling kit on your truck Racerx520? Im running a Firestone M/T 285/70-17 on my stock wheels and I get a little rubbing from time to time. Usually when parking or an extreme crank on the wheel. I have a 2.5" leveling kit on the front and Firestone Bags on the rear.

 

Hope you get some good feedback on this subject because Im in the market for the same tires and I live in Idaho so a big nasty storm with 6+ inches is almost a weekly occurrence around here at winter!

i just put on a 2.5 leveling kit, 3" block and if i can ever get a day off im goin to put in my 1.5" body lift thats in my kitchen right now.

 

i looked more into this tire size, im not really feeling the terra grapps, i fell in love with the trail grapps but the only local place that carries them wants $330 a tire, thats just too much for me. so im between 3 now, i'll post up a poll soon for the 3 to get opinions
