Sorry but the issue was not the thermostat, it was the code that comes with running a cooler thermostat. Unless you are willing to turn the temp code related to the thermostat off you will always get this error.

 

The ECM has to see 167° with in 2 drive cycles or else the error light triggers.

 

I have tuned this error out on the last 5 GM vehicles I have owned, all of them have a 160° thermostat in them.

Efficiency = 1 - (Ta / Te)

 

Ta = Ambient Temperature (outside temps or air surrounding engine)

Te = Engine Temperature

 

pulled that straight from my old freshmen engineering textbook. the higher the engine temp, the more efficient the engine is. also, the colder the ambient temps, the more efficient the engine is. anyone notice how they get better mpg's when its cold outside? and that is why newer model engines run at as close to the boiling point of water as safely possible.

Keep the stock stat and upgrade the radiator to a 6.0 L 2500, one core. Temp will be 170*- 180*, heater in winter will be lukewarm at 90*. I did this upgrade a year ago, no mpg drop or any codes. Last summer, temps will reach 200* with a/c, on freeway. Truck is a 1999 silverado, unsure if newer model is different.

Did you ever wonder why GM puts a 195 t/stat in the engine in the 1st place? .......

 

The parts in the engine all expand at different rates. everything fits right at 195. Trying to run the engine at a lower temp just frustrates the proper design of the engine. Not to mention all of the computer programing that triggers different electronic functions in the engine.

 

If you are experiencing an over-heating problem, a lower temp t/stat does absolutely nothing to resolve that issue. At 195 either thermostat is fully open and if the engine goes above 195, you have a different issue.

 

gm4yrs...... I don't care if you put 10 radiators in your vehicle. If you have a 195 thermo, the engine should maintain 195. If you are running 170-180 with a 195 t/stat, your t/stat is not working and you are subjecting your engine to unnecessary wear from not running at design temp and the computer thinks that your engine has not reached running temp yet so it sends mixed signals to every electronic device on your engine that controls air/fuel mixture, timing etc..

 

I have the puny little radiator that comes as the standard for the 4.8. I have never seen temps above 210 even with max payload, towing a 4K# trailer up a 6% grade on a 115* day.

Actually a 195° is a function of emmissions more than anything. You have to have higher cylinder temps in order to properly burn off all of the fuels and to meet EPA requirements.

That's correct but the fact is, that's the temp that all of the engine parts are designed around (for expansion and contraction) and electronic control devices for optimum performance........... higher temps will result in too much expansion until (at some point) the parts will seize. Lower temps will result in too little expansion and parts are too lose resulting in increased wear.

 

There is absolutely no upside to running a lower temp t/stat.

 

There are dozens of things that could cause an engine to over-heat....... a lower temp t/stat will cure none of those issues.

In 2005, didn't 1500's have 34 in. radiators with electric fans? Only difference I have is an all aluminum radiator.

I am almost certain most people dont run a lower t-stat to avoid overheating, they run them so the vehicle runs cooler which results in a denser air charge which helps with not only making more power but also with detonation and being able to run a more aggressive timing map.

Don't be TOO certain. Read the last paragraph in the 1st post.

 

This is a very common scenario. People often think that a lower temp t/stat will help avoid over-heating (it doesn't). In fact, it's common for some people to remove the t/stat all together.. This will sometimes make the engine run hotter because the water travels through the radiator to quickly to cool.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
