How To Stop The Window Noise

Recommended Posts

Every time I go over a bumpy road, my rear windows make noises. Sounds like they are loose or something. It has gotten really annoying. Since they just sound loose, I didnt know if the new latches would fix it or not. What can I do to make these stop making noises?

My '00 had that. It's like the latches didn't pull the windows shut all the way (they seemed to pop open stupid easy). Dealer said you had to replace the whole window (latches weren't sold separately). I ended up just siliconing them shut since I never used them.

These fixed the wind noise on my 05. They pull the window in .050 tighter.

I bought those as well, but I was unable to remove the old "dog bones" to replace with the new ones. Any suggestions? They didn't really come with instructions. I think the guy just had some pictures on his ebay auction.

They will come out. you just need needle nose pliers and a screw driver, could have even been some long nose vice grips involved. I can't remember, and a lot of bending and prising. I have changed them out.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Owners may comment on a wind noise coming from the rear 1/4 glass of their extended cab truck. The wind noise may be diminished by pulling in on the glass handle. This concern may be caused by the glass handle/latch not holding the 1/4 glass closed tight enough against the weather seal. In most cases, the 1/4 glass will not be flush with the body/door and will be sticking out a few millimeters.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this concern, adjust the 1/4 glass mounting flange inward so the handle/latch will pull the 1/4 glass tighter to the weather seal. Use the following procedure to adjust the mounting flange inward:

Remove the Side Access Door Trim Panel per SI Document ID # 764454

Open the 1/4 glass to the full open position.

Use channel locks or equivalent pliers and a cloth to adjust the mounting flange inward. Use the cloth to protect the painted surface of the flange and the 1/4 glass plastic frame and weather seal.

With the cloth in the jaws of the pliers, adjust the flange inward below the 1/4 glass handle/latch.

With the cloth in the jaws of the pliers, adjust the flange inward above the 1/4 glass handle/latch.

Note: It may take some pressure to adjust the flange inward. If a good thick cloth is used, no damage will be done to the painted surface or 1/4 glass frame/weather seal.

After adjusting the flange, close the 1/4 glass and check glass flushness to the body/door. The glass should be flush or slightly inward from the body/door, if not repeat steps 4 and 5.

Reinstall the Side Access Door Trim Panel per SI Document ID# 764454.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

I did a little searching...... I read a couple that said the newest fix was replacing the window. Mine do it from time to time but my glasses are good and tight. I usually open both and clean the seal with a wet rag, let it dry and silicon spray them. Then shut them.

I can think of one time when I actually opened one when it wasn't to clean and spray them. A/C belt broke. And it was only for a couple miles, till I got to work and fixed it.

But there are people that said their window was loose or the plastic molding was not tight against the body..... Mine have never been.

Mine is loose and moves around, you can just push against it and see that it moves quite a lot. I dont really want to have to replace them, but with winter coming with all the ice and snow, im sure it will drive me nuts. But if its too expensive I may just try to ignore it

I would not buy the wind noise fix kit from ebay. I bought this and replaced the "dogbone" on my passenger side window. It mostly stopped the noise for about a month. Then I go to get in my truck one morning for work and find that it had cause the glass to come unglued from the plastic latch. New window cost me $395 from the dealer. Wished I had left it alone. On the bright side, the new window from the dealer is nice and quiet.

You could always pickup some clear RTV and seal it (if your like me and don't use them)...... Are those windows available in the aftermarket???? Hmmmmmmm.

I have had this and found a great solution. I went to Meijer, a chain store like walmart, and bought some weather stripping. It is about and inch wide and quarter inch thick where one side is adhsive. I used this and stuck it to the window around the farthest outside edge. It is covered enough that when the window is closed you cannot see weather stripping very much but if you do it right it blends in with tinted rear windows black edge. I had the same problem with the latch being a little funney and not pulling tight enough. this "fixed" that and I have zero wind noise now. It only cost around 10 bucks for a 10 foot roll. I have had mine on for three years now through the winter and rain and no leaks and none of it has even thought about moving. It is a great a great low cost and effective solution that doesnt look to bad either. I will try and take a few pictures if you would like tomm. This is the autozone equivilent I belive.

I dont think I have a problem with the wind noise or a leak. It just seems like the window is loose and when I go over bumps it makes noise. I wonder if that may fix it though

If you could get some pictures I would appreciate it!

Here are the pictures. You will be able to see how deep of a groove the window now leaves in the weather stripping. That is why the latch works again. The added pressure of the weather stripping keeps the latch working very well. You will also see in the bottom right corner where I did not a small section. You could easily fill in this spot but non of that is visible from inside the truck or outside. Inside the truck all you can see is a small boarder that blends in nicley with the tint and unless your looking for it, or have done this, you would not think it was not suppose to be there. Especially if you like me and no one realy rides in the back.
