What's With The Tiny Oil Filter?

PF61 is the long equivilant of a PF46. I use it but under the Puralator Gold or Wix brands (depending on what I can get at the time). The Puraltor Gold's are nice because they have a grip coating on them so no oil filter wrench needed.

Awesome! Thank you sir! Online it shows the filter for my truck to be pf48..... that is the new part number for the pf46 right?

Does one have a check valve and the other one doesn't? Does anyone know what the difference is between a PF61 and PF63?

And idiots like me need to double check thier posts for correct information as well. Sheesh! First a 46, instead of a 48 and then a 61 instead of a 63! Both things that have been burned into my brain for years and missed them both in the same thread.

the main difference seems to be the threads... the PF61 has 13/16 x 16 threads while the (new) PF63 has 22mmx1.5 threads.

 

Now, to figure out what threads my '06 4.8 (Which takes the PF46) nipple has.........

Easy way to figure out filters is to go the the Wix web site and put in the competitors part number. It will give you their filter equivilant with dimensions.

BTW.......... don't feel bad about the filter size. I changed the oil in my wife's '07 Saturn this weekend. The oil filter looks like the old style paper filter that used to go into quadrajet carburetors....... HMMMMMM!!! that probably doesn't relate to 90% of you... ......It's just a paper filter (without the can) about 2.5" in diameter and ~3" long......

Yeah, better know as a complete mess after changing....... Seems that after all the years of us having screw on filters. And enjoying oil free hands after changing oil. Now they want to swap back to a canister filter.... I was surprised when we got the GMT900 platform it didn't have one (as they are quite cheaper).

The one in our Saturn is really neat to change. The filter is recessed into the engine casting that has a screw on lid on top. Just unscrew the lid and the filter comes out with the lid. Didn't get a drop of oil on me. The entire oil change took less than 15 minutes.
