How to Replace headlight

Recommended Posts

My front headlight burned out.  Not the Daytime Running Light but the front headlight beam.  I'm going to go buy a Chilton's for the truck and do it myself.  Has anyone done this yet?  Is it hard?  I opened the hood and it did not look too easy to get to the bulb.

It is very easy to change the light.  I'm not sure of the bulb number but all you have to do to get to the bulb is, pull the pin that is holding the light in on the back of the light, and pull away unsrew the bulb out and replace, repeat steps to get it back on.  :jester:

There are two tent like pegs that hold the entire headlight in.

Remove both pins from the top, and the headlight will come right away from the truck. replace bulb and reassemble in reverse order.

Just swing the "L" shaped pins to the side and lift them out.  Then lift the light housing out.  Rotate the connection on the back and the bulb should be there.  At least that was the procedure for the DRL swap I did.  I would think most of that would be the same for the headlights.

Once you have the headlamp assembly loose, remove the bulb housing by rotating it 1/4 turn.  The connector has a clip on the side of the housing.  Gently pull back on the clip and pull the bulb assembly from the connector.

Replacement bulbs are a 9006 for low beam and 9005 for high beam.   I would suggest upgrading your lights with the Sylvania SilverStar bulbs.  They will run about $40 for a pair, but the light output is fantastic compared to the stock lights.

Install the new bulb by simply pushing the connector onto the bulb housing.  DO NOT touch the glass bulb with your fingers.  Halogen bulbs get much hotter and oils from your skin will cause the glass to etch.  Use a bit of denatured alcohol and a piece of clean cloth to clean the bulb if you do touch it.  Place the bulb back into the housing and turn to lock.  They will only go in one way.  Place the headlamp housing back and insert the pins.  You should not need to readjust the headlamp aim.

Anyone know the daytime running light (DRL) part number?

Thanks in advance...

I checked my Haynes manual, but couldn't find the #.  I know it's in the owner's manual.  I replaced mine with the ambers a while back and don't recall the number off hand.

Thanks Ryan, the number I got was the Sylvania 3157LL (long life).  I saw the Silverstar bulbs, but didn't get them.

Now, the install.  I have a body lift.  When I removed the headlights, to be able to reach behind the DRLs, I couldn't get the DRL holder to turn.  There was some bracket in the way, and I can't get it out.  Anyone with a body lift (or without) have any suggestions here?

Thanks.

Once the headlight is out, the DRL/turn signal comes off very easily. The side closest to the fender is a snap in with the center grill part located behind the grill. Squeeze the clip and pull out, the assembly should then basically fall out in your hand.

Same here.  Very easy.  Interesting note, when I installed the new DRL bulbs, I went ahead and switched em both, since the bulbs came as a 2-pack, and are very cheap ($3.95).  The bulbs didn't come on right away, I drove for about 5-10 minutes before they came on.

Anyway, they are on now!  Thanks again for ya'lls help. :thumb:
