Dealer Issues / Rusted Brake Lines

Can anyone give me any info on dealing with the BBB. i have all ready sent in my complaint and desired resolution (yesterday at about 2000hrs). i expect the dealer to come back with a well you should have done _____. my issue is involving the rotting brake lines on silverados. i have all my paperwork from when i purchased the truck (less than 5 months ago) and some other paperwork that shows they did not correctly inspect my truck during my last oil change, and receipts for the repairs. i just want to touch base with people that may have had the same issue as me and what to expect because this will probably be drawn out.

I guess his complaint is that he bought the truck as a cerfied or inspected vehicle recently and the seller failed to note that brake lines were about to rust away, and did not correct the problem.

What year truck? 2004 like whats in your info?

yes a 2004 1500 4wd z71 the truck was certified used. the dealer did not disclose anything wrong with the truck. dealer wanted 3k to fix the brake lines. the only thing they offered to me was a payment plan, that's all.

Edit: dealer cert used not gm cert used

should i talk to the mass attorney general for shady business practices? i know the BBB is a reporting agency to the business but will they really assist in these kind of issues? i called the NHTSA and put in a report about the instant loss in braking ability and filed a complaint with GM with the BBB vehicle dept.

I am pretty sure that you will be in court fighting the actual dealer instead of GM. Just keep that in mind

At any rate, 3K to replace brake lines is a robbery, unless the vehicle is a Greyhound bus or larger.

Any competent brake shop should replace all of the steel brake lines on a full size pickup truck for $500 or so, parts and labor included.

Did you buy the truck from a GM dealership?

BBB will do nothing to help you. Does Mass have a Bureau of Automotive Repair?

Your best recourse may be to take it to a different Chevy Dealership, have them do the repair. If you feel that you were defrauded, sue in Small Claims Court. If you were defruaded, you'll win. If you weren't, you'll lose. All the other jirations are just a waist of time and frustration IMO.

If you post pics of your issue, people may be able to weigh in with an opinion.

BTW....... Re to, "i called the NHTSA and put in a report about the instant loss in braking ability".......

Are you saying that the brake line actually corroded through and you lost your brakes while driving???? Seems kinda weird that you left that bit out in your 1st post...... anyway, that changes everything (if that's the case).... pics would be really helpful here.

There is a huge difference between, "Oh, help me, my brake lines are rusty" and "Hey.... I could have been killed here!!!!"

BTW..... check with GM Parts. You used to be able to order pre-bent brake lines for most vehicles.

Here is '05-'07 illustration. No illustration for '04 ..... may be discontinued.

Then again...... the way that it is listed may just be bulk hose @ $2.61 per ft. or $30.91 per roll.

Most brake shops just bend their own....... $3K is ludicrous.

It might take a tech 8 hours to bend up line and flare the fittings for the entire vehicle. 8 hrs (it's a pretty tedious job) @ $100 per hour (or whatever).... $200 in parts...... and that is way out there...... If the flex lines need to be changed....... another $50- $80 per wheel.

I will second this. Why would they order them? ................... The roll is a lot easier, and probably quicker. Considering they would have to special order them vs call and have some line delivered.

If one could order the lines pre-bent, that would save a lot of labor in getting the bends just right (that stuff's not easy to bend, even with the proper bender) and flaring all of the ends.

If a guy could get all the lines ready made for say.... $400, I'd say go for it.

older brake lines were a ***** to bend and very easy to kink, but the newer line they are making is softer and much harder to kink, a lot easier to work with. and your estimate above seemed very realistic, right around what i would expect it to be.

i stopped for gas nothing was wrong with the braking system on the truck, started to pull out of the gas station and could not stop i continued to glide into traffic while hitting the break and got the "Service break system" prompt on the DIC and the brake light flashing. I then slammed on the e break. this all occurred on the 20th. i just had my oil changed at the same dealer i purchased the truck from with the Multi point inspection, the some one that wants 3k to fix the truck, and the paperwork mentioned nothing about the rust on my lines. They did dent even check off anything on the brake line box! They also stated my fuel lines needed to be changed out because they too were rusted. and on the same inspection sheet states my fuel system is fine! GM wants 300 per brake line for the factory runs. i got all 4 lines and new bleeders at the local shop replaced with http://www.fedhillusa.com/ lines for $930 they fixed an improperly punched down u joint on the axle for me as-well but i cant prove or do i think that the dealer did the u joint work. one thing i did not do is take pictures of the break lines i don't know why i didn't think to do that. if i can find it ill post up my complaint to the BBB of the dealer.
