2011 Sierra: Initial Oil Change Question

Recommended Posts

Hey folks! I just did the 1st oil change on my new Sierra. Is it normal for the factory-installed oil to be "slimy" for lack of a better term? Is this assembly-lube being washed off? The old oil looked terrible for 2600 miles...glad I changed it.

FWIW, I replaced with AC Delco filter and a combo of 5w-30 and 0w-40 Mobil One...

Geez....I meant "2011" in the thread title. You guys are going to think I'm insane just now performing an initial oil change on a 2001...

Possible I suppose. Keep an eye on it  I don't recall what mine was like. I didn't really touch it. I did however change it at 1000 miles and then I follow the OLM.

Yah. I didn't like the old oil's texture or color. I haven't bought a brand-new vehicle since my 2000 Z28, though, so wasn't sure...

I'll keep close tabs and report back on here.

Why did you combine the 2 types of oil?

Also fixed the title and moved to the maintenance forum

+1.

The two oils don't average themselves out. You should have just used the 5w-30

I used a 5 gallon jug of 5w-30, which I had purchased for the truck, and topped off using some of the 0w-40 I keep on hand for my Z06. It won't hurt anything.

Thanks for the move to the correct forum! :driving:

Might hurt your warranty if you have any issues and they find out?

If they find out I used an oil that exceeds the parameters of the original? Highly unlikely that the oil analysis would show anything out of specs.

ok, no need to keep this going just be sure to read the manual and see what it says about the recommended use of oil.

To stay back on topic I changed mine at about 500 miles on my 2010 and it wasnt slimy. It was kinda dirty and glad I changed it at 500 miles.

IIRC< I changed oil on my '08 Silverado 6.0L after about 1500 miles. I did it myself and put Mobil One 5w-30 and have been using that ever since. The service adviser at my dealership (a guy I know and trust) said there was no real reason to change the oil early. The dealership uses a 5w-30 synthetic blend (I think it's Quaker State) for trucks with both the 5.3 and 6.0 motors.

I don't think I would mix oil viscosities even if it was just a quart. Any warranty repairs for engine damage could be refused if an oil analysis showed something out of spec. I remember back in the late 60's through the early 80's where GM said the use of 10W-40 instead of the recommended 10w-30 in SBC's would be cause for cancelling of the engine warranty. Most big-name brands of oil today have to meet a manufacturer's spec for oil and using an oil not meeting the specs could cost a customer the loss of coverage if a dealership would only go by the GM specs.

OK. Well thoughts on mixing oil weights aside, the initial oil was definitely a different "texture" for lack of a better term and I'm glad I changed it out. I thought it might be a special break-in oil, or maybe some residual contaminants from break-in. Maybe it was just crappy since being on the lot since May...
