Stop light to stop light question

Gentleman,

My buddy and me are having a disagreement with something. We both agree however that the concensis of the people on this forum will be the answer to our arguement. Here it is.

One of us says that a GM 4x4 EC 4.10 w/5.3 is faster stop light to stop light than a GM 4x4 EC 4.10 w/8.1 or 6.0. Obviously the 2500HDs are heavier but the power and tourque of the engines supposedly make up for it right? So what do you guys think is the fastest? I know trucks arent for racing but we just wonder what you guys think.

Anyway, if you guys could help us out with your opinions,(as I said, your opinions count) one of us will win a case of beer. We are just bored and have to see what the "experts" say. I used to own a 5.7L in that same configuration but neither of us have owned any new trucks. Thanks guys, hope to hear from you soon.

                                           -Chris

PS- I am actually thinking of buying a new truck in a few months if that has anything to do with this. I dont plan on racing it though.

I don't have any hard numbers, but I'm guessing a 5.3L 1500 with 4.10's would outrun the 2500HD 6.0L 4.10.

I don't know about an Allison equipped 8.1L though...  but I'm guessing it would keep up with the 1500 small block.

Certainly there have been some 0-60 tests done for various trucks, but I don't know where that data would be found.

This is the test results I have: 1/4 mile times.....

GMC HD 8.1 with 4.10's ..... 17.24 @81.04

GMC HD Duramax with 3.73'[email protected]

Those are the HD #'s I got from a 4wheel&Offroad magazine.

The 1500 5.3 with 4.10's has numbers closer to 16 seconds or so. I have heard faster and slower #'s for it, but I'm sure the 1500 with a 5.3 and 4.10's will outrun it's big brothers. I have driven all three, except with 3.73's, and the 5.3 definitely feels a little quicker. I have yet to drive a 6.0 though, so I have no comment on it.

In like body configurations the 5.3 would definately beat the 8.1 and 6.0 stoplight to stoplight.  The extra weight does help slow them down  but the killer is the transmissions in the 3/4 tons.  The 6.0 has the 480LE which has a much higher (lower numerically) first gear than the 460 in the 1/2 tons.  Also, the allison with the 8.1 is a pretty power robbing transmission, so I would think that it could beat it, too (I'm not sure of the first gear in the alli).

For what it's worth, I had a little impromptu race with my brother who owns a '99 Z71 extended cab 5.3L with a lift, bigger wheels and tires, K&N drop in filter and about 85,000 miles on her.  I think he has the 3.73's.  Anyway, I raced him on the way home from church a few weeks back in my regular cab 2500HD 6.0 4.10 totally stock except for a UPD intake.

I drag race my Vette, so I should have known, but I thought I would blow my 245 tires away on my truck, but I didn't load up the tranny against the brake (where you left foot brake as you push down on the accelerator a bit until the light goes green).....

Anyway, my brother did load up the tranny, so when the light went green, he lifted his left foot off the brake and mashed the gas.  I just took my right foot off the brake and hit the gas.  He got the jump on me and had about half a truck length on me through 1st gear...as we both shifted into second gear, I started creeping up on him and as we both wound out second gear I started to pull away from him and had about a truck length on him when we both shut down at around 70ish mph....

I was surprised his truck did as well through first, I thought that would be money gear since I have the 4.10's, but I didn't have anything on him until second gear....

I would think a 4x4 1500 with the 5.3L and 4.10's would beat a 2500HD with 4.10's and a 6.0L just due to the extra weight of the 2500HD.  Those 5.3L's move out pretty nicely with 285hp and 325lb/ft of torque.  Really not a ton different than the 300hp and 360lb/ft of torque on the 6.0L.  Now, if you're towing, that's a different story because the 6.0L will do it longer and harder with the iron block and 4L80E tranny.       My 3 cent... :thumb:

Each 100lbs of weight is roughly the equivalent of 1/10th of a second in the 1/4 mile.  With that said, an HD generally weighs around 500 - 1,000lbs MORE than a 1/2 ton.

That's a 1/2 - 1 second handicap right there.

THe power of the bigger motors does make up for quite some of the difference, but the huge factor for 8.1's is the boat anchor Allison.  It's shift patterns simply weren't programmed for drag racing.  It was programmed for Hauling and heavy towing.  It shifts Waaayyyyyy too soon and torque management is real bad with it.

Once one eliminates torque management and can program the PCM to hold on each gear for an extra 500 - 1,000rpm, the 8.1 can stretch it's legs.

But in stock form, it's really handcuffed in the performance department.

Yes the 5.3's are pretty fast and would definately take my truck unloaded...Now lets race my way and hook a 10,000lbs Posi Trac to the back of it and run'em...

I was originally gonna ask if there was going to be a 15,000lb trailer out back, but I kinda figured there wasn't gonna be.  :D

But what BD said.

I have three friends with 1500HDs--6.0's-I don't know what rear end.

I have the 5.3L with 4.10's

I can outrun them, but they may be letting me win :D

But, I don't know any numbers! So I am not voting.

For some reason, I don't think my 6.0L would hold up too long with a 15,000 lb trailer.  :D  Actually, I think my 4L80E would go first.   :D

My truck would hate me but I would grossly overload it and pull 15,000lbs around in 2nd gear at 4,000rpms...lol...the little 6.0's aren't a bad motor but get anything over 10,000lbs behind them and they are a done motor.  The NV4500 makes it nice with a low first gear to get the load moving then a second gear that is lower than the 4l80e's first but third is a huge drop and the only way to get the truck to pull is to wind 2nd up to about 4,000rpms and dump it into third and try not to lose to many rpms... Yes I've done this, yes my clutch will be got in another 10,000 miles.  But with a load of 10,000 or under I would race you. :thumb:
