Tune with the 5.3L & 6-speed tranny

I have been tossing around the idea of getting a tune done to my truck. I honestly hate the 6-speed tranny and its shift points, it makes me wish for the 4-speed tranny. I also have the 3.08 gears in my truck instead of the 3.42 (which I never bothered looking at, but that was my own fault). There is a local shop that does tuning and I asked them about it. They said I would need to run 93+ octane in the truck and that the tune would be $400. They said that even though I would be paying extra for 93+ octane, my gas mileage would be a little better with the tune and help offset that. They also said that if I ran 87 octane to not even bother with the tune, I wouldn't notice a big difference.

Does this sound right to you guys?

Sort of.... You could get away with 89 when having the 93 tune if need be. I have the 93 tune and run 89 from time to time... when I'm just burning gas. BB will get you some extra ponies with 87 so... not sure why they tell you not to bother.

Also,... BB does some good magic with the 6-speed and it's shift points. That combined with the Performance tune really wakes up the truck. Everytruck I've ownd that could be programmed was. It makes a noticable difference

Some of it to an extent. Will you get better mileage with the 93 tune, no. And if you do it wont be significant at all. You should look into a blackbear tune, might be cheaper and I haven't seen one dissatisfied person yet. Oh as far as the 87 tune, you will see a slight increase but not as much as the 93.

Get a Blackbear tune hands down. I have an 89 octane tune. Will you get more power out of a 93 compared to a 87, yes...... but mileage will not be noticeable between the 2 different octane tunes. I have witnessed with my '08 4-speed and with my '10 6-speed the magic Justin at BB can do. It's night and day difference.

My '08 had an 87 octane tune...... it was def better than stock. Some of what they are saying makes sense, but some sounds to me like they are just wanting to do it their way. Justin at BB tunes it to how YOU want it. I wold save an extra little bit and go with the BB Autocal.

Edit: I've never personally dealt with Diablosport but I've seen nothing but positive reviews. That's another option.

You could look into our handheld tuners. They come preloaded with 87 tunes and premium fuel tunes, and you can switch anytime you want, in addition to being able to go back to stock if needed for dealer visits.

The trinity has full TCM support for your 6 speed currently, and our inTune device will be getting TCM controls very soon.

Thanks

Jdub,

You have the same truck as me, but CC. What is the fog light diode mod?

I also hated the six speed and its shift points. It wanted to upshift way to soon and lug and not downshift when needed unless I gave it a lot of gas. It's really the only reason I decided to get a BB Autocal tune but I do enjoy the added performance with the 93 octane tune. I have the 3:42 but think you will hardly notice the 3:08 with a tune. It builds more RPM's in each gear before shifting and downshifts when needed. It's perfect now and I really enjoy driving it so much more.

it is a mod that allows your fogs to always be one with your low beams, and when your hi's are on they stay on as well
