Ok wednesday i am going skiing thinking about taking the digital camera (new hp318 2.31 megapixels)

High for the day is 34 and low 18.  Sitting in the center console.

Anything i can use to keep it warm?  Towels?

Walmart has some real cheap handwarmers in an orange packet but don't get it too close to the camera as it does get hot. You sure don't want a 2 megapixel puddle of plastic. They last me about 4 hrs. no matter what the packet says.

IMO, and from experience with other electronics, I don't think the cold will hurt it.  A long time ago my dad asked me, "How do you think the merchandise gets to the store?  A heated semi trailer?"  ???  What I worry about is storing it the cold and then bringing it in to get warm.  This usually causes condensation to form on all the cold parts.  Electricity and water (moisture) don't mix.  I usually wait till the electronics warm up and any moisture formed has evaporated off.  I also know that batteries don't work well when they are cold.  Just warm them up and shoot away!  :D

I'm not quite sure.   ??? Just off the top of my head, I imagine if you leave it in the cold long enough, I'm thinking days and weeks, it might loose the data.  Then again how long do they retain the memory?  Let me look into this.  You've got me intrigued.  :(

I pretty sure that you will ski longer than 4 hour hand warmers.  Even when the warmers stop the camera will still be warm for a while....then get cold.  I think you still will have to fight the cold issue.   :D

I think you are worrying about something you shouldnt.  Kept my Olympus in the truck several days last week with no problems or loss of data.  Had reasonably used batteries in it too.  Just use it as needed!

Ok thanks guys im not worried and i am taking it now

That's what I would do.  If it was that detrimental to the camera, they'd mention it on the box and/or instruction manual.  Have fun skiing.  I'm going skiing at Galena, IL (Chestnut Mountain) on Sunday.  Wahoooooo!!!!

btw  Here is a quick link I found about flash memory.

On the length of storage capacity....."Data retention of these devices is manufacturer dependent, but is more than 20 years in most cases."  from

no not flash memory i mean the flash (bright light) itself

The only thing I'd worry about would be the battery in cold weather.  Unless it's on having electricity flowing, cold doesn't agree with batteries.  :D

Siu, I was in Galena two weeks ago at Eagle Ridge.

I have an Olympus digital camera.  I've used it in all types of weather, hot, cold...etc.  No problems.  The only problem I've had was the lens fogging up because of quick temp changes.  Other than that, you should be ok.  Everything is just about solid state so temp really should not be much of a factor.

My camera, which is similar to ryan's, get's glitchy in cold weather, the camera will just shut off when you're taking a picture.  I figure this has more to do w/ the batteries getting cold since a quick battery change solves the problem.

If something like that happens to you, just take out the batteries and either hold them in your hand or put them in your pocket so they can warm up.

RYAN  oops...silly me  :stupid:

CMNT What is Eagle Ridge?  Another ski slope?  I'm going with a local music station WSWT 106.9.  Hopefully, I can meet some women on the bus trip!   :D  If there are no women on the buses, I'll have to find one on the slopes.  If I don't find one on the slopes, I'll just do stupid stuff on the slopes all day. (looking back that sounds like the Chief Master Diver in Honorable Men)  I can get mundo air, but trying to stick the landing is the tough part.
