transfer case issues

My 03 sierra 2500hd is making a loud clicking/whipping noise while driving in 2wd, 4hi, or 4lo that i'm certain is coming from the transfer case. For a while it would also make a loud clunking noise when 4hi and lo was engaged. It doesn't make the clunking noise lately which i think is weird but that clicking noise is always there. I also seem to have a lot of play with the manual shift lever. Any ideas what my problem may be?

Have you checked the fluid level?

 

If empty you may be another "pump rub" victim!

fluid is good and full

is it possible that instead of a transfercase problem, it may just be the front u joints??
