Mild Mods for 5.3l

I have a 2001 4WD Suburban with 5.3l and 4L60-E, 3.73 gr, 135k. It's using 1-2 qts oil in between oil changes, so time for some motor work. I don't see any blue smoke except occasionally after starting for a short period of time. Someone mentioned valve seals as most likely culprit. Regardless, I am looking for some suggestions on improvements in power for about $1500 while I'm fixing the other. We occasionally tow a small camp trailer, less than 6000 lbs. Seems the biggest issue with the truck is the trans, its a long way between 2nd and 3rd; often second is too low, but third is too high for the truck to pull it. I'm not a knowledgeable engine guy, so talk slow. Want it to be good daily driver when done. Thanks.

I would get computer tune from blackbear or wheatley. They can change the shift points and such. Its burban so its already pulling weight. If i ever had one i would do the usually mods.Long tube headers, custom tune,intake.etc.I say long tube headers because the truck basically has shortie headers on it already.I would only do mods if the motor still feels strong.
