Broken valve springs

I drive a 2008 Sierra 1500 with the Vortec max engine and the heavy duty tow pkg. My truck began running very rough night before last. The check engine light came on and the message "service stabilitrak" came on. I took it to the dealer the next morning and today was told there were broken valve spring(s). I follow service recommendations from my dealer.

Questions:

1)What does this mean & what caused this issue?

2)Should I be concerned about metal fragments/filings in the engine causing additional issues?

Fatigue for excessive engine stresses (high heat/high rpm/etc) or faulty springs. It's mechanical, it can break.

 

More than likely 0 to worry about there. When a spring breaks it is usually a clean break of the coil with little to 0 fragmentation.

Ok The advice the online tech gave was exactly what my GM serviceman said.

 

However, there is more to the problem. The dealership is pulling the engine. They have found a broken valve. The head is going to the machine shop. What additional damage should be considered with this type problem?

Damage to the piston the bad valve hit.
