Turn OGM1 Nav off

I'm sure this is an easy one but I have searched the manual as well as this forum with no luck.

How can I turn off the Nav mid-way along a trip? After processing an address and following the route directions part way, I have tried ending the process and going back to the radio, either by pressing the NAV button or going to the menu screen and pressing the radio icon. In both cases, the unit will show the radio and will function as a radio, but I can still hear "Jill" giving me verbal directions whenever I change course. I am trying to quit Nav altogether and not have it continue to run in the background.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah- if you're in the map screen, press menu-my route-cancel route and then confirm. I also have the cancel command in my quick menu, which is an icon somewhere in the top right (I can't tell ya where offhand, sorry).

i have Jill turned off, her voice annoys me... i just watch the screen for my turns

There are several options- a male and female voice that can do street names in both US English and UK English then there are "real" male and female voices of both types as well. Plus non-English if ya wanna play that game.

Thanks MikeNH, I will give that a try.

As to the sound of Jill's voice, my wife had a Magellan Nav and she controlled the thing and loved to listen to Mag's voice but after about 10 minutes it drove me so crazy it took all my self control to not drive into a pole. Now that it's my Nav in my truck, I expect Jill will become silent very quickly.

i didn't like any of the voices, they all distort in my cheap factory speakers and sound terrible. for now i just watch the screen until i figure something else out.

is there any way to hack in some custom voices like in the TomToms and stuff? I'd kill if Elizabeth Hurley was telling me where to go, or Snoop Dogg....

The nice thing about Jill (and I forget the dudes name that is her counterpart) is that they do Text To Speech (TTS) which means it will announce street names. The other US voices sound much better but are not TTS :/. It is possible for to have better TTS voices but I am guessing we are limited by the Processor power of the OGM1.

On my Android I am running a Loquendo TTS voice for the phone which iGO can use directly. That voice is so realistic it is spooky! So it is possible to have a natural-sounding voice.

I am sure it is possible to get celebrity voices (use to do it when I was running TomTom on my phones) but you would probably loose TTS.

The special voices won't do TTS. I watched a special about GPS on TV once and they followed someone who did the voices for TomTom. She only has to say like 30 words to do everything.

Speaking of the Nav voice,

Since my last post, I have travelled half the distance on a round trip from BC Canada to Denver. Much of the trip was through fairly desolate areas that had no radio coverage. To listen to the Nav voice, I had to have the radio volume turned up, however, without radio coverage, when the Nav was not talking, the speakers emitted a background static that I found annoying. Is there a way to not have the radio playing (and no static) while still getting sound from the Nav?
