5.3L exhaust manifold bolts

Back bolt on each side is broken, shocker! Need to replace.

 

What is the length & diameter? SAE or metric?

Best material? (stainless? graded?)

 

Only want to make this repair one time. Appreciate your help guys... Thanks

Try a search for manifold bolts, it seems this is a common problem on these trucks. I have a broken bolt myself but too lazy to fix it...I'd probably break more than I'd fix.

I'm not trying to be a smart @$$ but I just drive my truck. Trust me, do a search it happens...a lot. I've not worked on my engine except a replacement belt, pulled two spark plugs to check condition and checked/changed fluids. Keep an eye on your bolts and don't be surprised if one breaks. It seems to happen to 6.0s as well.

Never heard tha b4. I'll have to check mine. Are ther updated bolts OR a TSB for this that you kow of? It's a shame if these things just fall apart like that.

Just replaced mine a month ago. I used new GM ones again. Not to bad of a job, I romped the inner fender and everything is right there. As for using Stainless I'm not sure if that's a good idea if you have aluminum heads because they are dissimilar metals. Just my 2 cents

Does someone know? I ended up having two broken on my 2010 and I don't drive my truck very hard either..

I have a friend with a muffler shop who replaced the driver's side rear on my '02 6.0 liter. Talked to him last week, he said that the 5.3 was having the same problem, apparently because the aluminum head and iron exhaust manifold heat up and expand at different rates causing the bolt holes to misalign when heated. He told me that GM now uses slightly softer bolts to compensate for the expansion and that he hasn't seen any needing replacement on 2011's or newer...

I got some grade 8's from a specialty bolt store..

 

Will those be ok for my headers?. I have aluminum heads.
