Heat stinks

When I use the heat in the truck it smells like old oil or something. It does not smell like antifreeze and it does not smell that way with the a/c on. No coolant loss and no moisture under passenger side carpet. Any ideas?

I had this problem not too long ago, still do to a lesser degree. If your heater core is deinitely not leaking it could be you have some sort of "funk" on the exterior surface and it's drawing the smell through the coils straight into your truck. I got a small view of my core when I was inspecting mine and found some "ick" laying at the bottom. I was running A/C pretty hard one day and then shut truck down and it sat for almost two weeks. The standing water that didn't drain off "grew" some funk on me and there's the smell.

I pretty much had that same idea in my head. I am thinking that there is about 15-16 years of "junk", "funk", dust or who knows what sitting on the blower motor fins and heater core. Im going to replace the heater core for just peace of mind and see if that helps and while I am at it im goin to clean things in there and see if that helps. Thanks for the info!

Is it possible that a dirty engine bay could cause the heat to smell? I used some degreaser under the hood the other day and it seemed to help the oil smell in the heat.

I would think it is possible. Run the truck around for a bit and see if it does go away completely. I'm still dealing with mine, haven't had much extra time here lately to get to fixing the little things going on.

Your heater draws in air in the cowl beteewn the hood and the windsheild i would start there

Im guessing this is a big contributor to the stinky heat. Gonna clean this up the best I can without removing the dash.

That evap core looks like its leaking. There's your smell.
