Help on getting a new HU

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting a new HU (headunit). Kinda getting tired of the same ole look of the dash/audio and so on. So. I'm thinking about getting a new headunit, but kinda stumped of which one to get. I narrowed my brands down to Kenwood, JVC, or Pioneer.

Trying to stay on a budget no more than $400 at the most.

Which HU's are you guys running?

Decided on some of these...................

I would lean more to JVC than kenwood, though both good brands; Have you checked sonicelectronix.com yet for their pricing? Thats where I go for all my truck audio needs. They usually have the best pricing and free shipping so might want to check in on that.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Why choose JVC over Kenwood?

I have been a Pioneer fan all my life. When I went to go pickup their top of the line Nav unit, they sold the last one. The guy told me to try their JVC KW-NT800HDT. He told me all of the perks it had over the Pioneer and if I didnt like it, I could take it back and get the Pioneer unit, so I figured, what the heck. Why not? He also dropped the price down to $899. Not bad for an MSRP of $1499. I must say, I am pretty impressed. This is my first Navigation unit and the first time I have went with anything other than Pioneer Premier decks. One thing that got my attention was the fact that it had a built in live Traffic without having to add on a unit like I would with the Pioneer. Im glad I opted to ditch my Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.1 with my factory radio. My sound has improved so much. 13 band EQ with Slope/Octive adjust-ability and more.

Mine is their top of the line model. You could look into lower line model Navigation units to fit your budget. Just something to think about

Thats a lot of cash to drop on a new Nag. HU, is it really worth that much? I already got a Garmin Portable GPS, don't see why I need one of those for.

We sell both of these (and in the same $$$ neighborhood as the big guys), and if it were me, I'd lean towards the JVC. It has a much bigger bang for the buck, especially if you use an iPhone, since you can plug it in and use the GPS app for your navigation and live traffic for traffic reports.

Keep in mind you'll have $$$ in adaptors and kit as well, so no way will you get out for under $400 all up - it will be more like $500 at minimum with SW control module (plus install unless you do it yourself)...

Yeah I know it be a little bit more money with that extra stuff. Whata bout if I don't have an iPhone? I have a Droid Razr Maxx.

Then neither of these decks are going to be nearly as cool.

Like it or not, the iPhone & its apps are what all the major manufacturers are going to support, so although the new crop of A/V decks are extremely cool and have way more bang for the buck than they ever used to have, they won't be nearly as capable if you're using a Droid phone compared to an iPhone...

Only thing that sucks about it, I'm gonna probably wait and get an iphone 5 when they come out the Fall.

I have decided on TWO units.... Both from this site, I can save $50-70 compared to Crutchfield.

Well you get what you pay for.

But if you already have a Garmin, then I guess there is no need for a Navigation Unit.

It was worth it to me. I hate having to fiddle with my Droid 3, especially when I had phone calls coming in and it would talk over me when I was talking on the phone although I love the Navigation on the Droid 3.

I opted for the top of the line unit because of its features and the tun-ability it had with my entire stereo. Plus I didnt want to go with a single din unit if I was going to get rid of my stock HU and my Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.1. To me, with how our pickups are designed with the interior, a single din just looks tacky. GM did a good job having the stock HU blend and flow so well with the entire dash and AC Controls. Then again, I have the Dual Climate Controls so I wanted to maintain the over flat design that it has with nothing sticking out like a single din HU or knobs from the standard A/C unit.

Navigation units do more than just Navigation and Stere such as real time traffic update, weather, sports scores, highlights, news and information, etc... It comes in pretty handy when Im on the road and I want to hear how my Texas Rangers, Dallas Starts, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, etc... are doing. It also helps you find restaraunts, shopping, gas stations, and alot more. Mine also comes with a USB port, headphone jack, RCA Audio in, RCA Backup Camera in, SC Memory Card slot

I hear nothing but good from Pioneer, 14,24,34,4400 models.

I was gonna get the 4400....but ehh too much.

I got the 2400 instead of the 3400, bc I don't listen to the radio that much unless, I'm not home & I listen to the race.

The only difference it had HD radio & I really don't care about it.

Im also getting Polk Audio DXi6500 Component Speaker System, gonna replace my fronts & leave my rear speakers stock for now.

Good investment?
