GM has learned a huge lesson from the current truck that bankrupted them. Another bail out from another failed truck is not an option. Many of the top brass have not been kind with their past GMT-900 comments. My money is on a truck that will match the competition and make people want to trade in their "slab sided" lint collectors with drum brakes. (I say slab sided because that is what the GM top brass refers to GMT-900 as.)

Failed truck? You must be joking. It it one of the oldest of the fullsizes currently out there yet last year GM sold more 1500 trucks than Ford did F150s and combined, the Chevy/GMC fullsize line isn't very far off pace from Ford, which counts the medium duty F450/550 in their figures, a vehicle class GM has no answer for right now. And you quoted one designer who's one major contribution to the US market (according to the article anyhow) was a flop. I'm not sure his opinion matters. And to claim GM nearly collapsed because of the 900s is the stupidest thing I have ever read on here.

Nevermind how short people's memories are- Ford does now make an excellent truck, I will admit that. But 2010 and prior had the miserable modular engines that weren't competitive on power, had all sorts of issues with spark plugs and timing chains, were awful to work on and I could go on and on. Dodge has seen a huge surge with the Ram and I'm not really sure why since it hasn't changed much since 2009 but either way I'm sure GMs new trucks will maintain the competitive edge.

As for drum brakes- I've yet to read any performance-related complaints about them. My 2003 Silverado had discs all around and those brakes were terrible. It's not a fullsize, but the rear drum-equipped Tacoma has the best 60-0 stopping distance of any midsize truck.

my drums on the back work great . The drums on the 91 f 250 work great to . With my little bit of experince with them I get lots of stoping power.

I'm excited to see what GM is going to come up with. Judging from the interior quality I've seen in the most recent GM cars I'm pretty sure we're all going to be impressed with the next generation of truck. Also I think one of the reasons the Avalanche is being discontinued is because they're going to integrate some of the features of that truck into the new one to one degree or another.

I have to say when I was at the Auto Show in Toronto, Dodge sales staff were doing a fantastic job and they had a great display too. That Ram Long Horn was one slick looking truck! Still love my Silverado but that Long Horn is a close second. This may be another explanation as to why they've seen an increase in sales. To be honest as long as people stay away from the Jap scrap trucks I'll be happy....happier if it's GM but nonetheless I'm very much looking forward to what they come up with in the new ones. I'll be coming up on being due for a new one too.....

I am excited to see the next generation! The GMT 900's hold their own even with the other manufacturers significanlty updating there full size's! I love my 6.2 NHT and nothing Ford or Dodge offers can perform like my 6.2. I will take my truck all day long over Fords Ecoboost and 6.2 and over Dodge's Hemi! I think the next generations will be a step up like always!

well the new rumors are that the new v6 will have power levels that match the current 5.3.

the sierra and silvy will only share a windshield, roof, tail gate, and side mirrors.

HIDs will be available.

8 speeds will be released with an MCE (similar to the 6 speed rollout on the 900s).

so if thats true, then the 5.3 should be near the hemi 5.7 in power and the the 6.2 should be in the 450 hp range...is the 4.8 obsolete?...couple that with an 8 speed and we have a monster...hopefully 6.2 availability will spread to the ext cab long beds (pretty sure theyre still not available right?)

I hear the 6.2 will only be available in h.d models in the 425 hp range.

To be honest the 4.8 was kind of a half-assed engine anyway. Less power than the 5.3 with worse mileage, while the V6 version (in regular cab trucks) got decent mileage with significantly less power. It's like if McDonald's had soda in 16oz, 30 oz, 32 oz, and 40 oz sizes.

Who would buy the 30 oz?

Personally I'm hoping it'll be the following:

Stock V6 - decent upgrade, better mileage - 300hp/torque - up to 22mpg freeway

Twin-turbo V6 - F150-like performance - 375hp, 400torque - up to 25mpg freeway

Stock V8 - ~380hp/400 torque - up to 20mpg freeway

High Output V8 - ~400hp/450 torque - up to 18mpg freeway

Small block diesel - 360hp/650 torque - up to 24mpg freeway, 18mpg in town

Just my thoughts.

I am a bit nervous. Hope it meets expectations. Full size P/U's still account for a very large chunk of profits. They cannot afford to blow it. From what I read, I dont think it will be transformational, but should be better than our GMT 900''s The question is; is that good enough for potential buyers and the automotive press

    • This is interesting. My quote tagged here is different from my original quote. After I’m driving them longer. That isn’t me. I don’t talk that way. I definitely wouldn’t express myself that way. Interesting.
    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
