Questions on buying truck

Well I'm looking into buying a pickup this fall. I will be looking for an extended cab 4x4 NHT (6.2), preferably a sierra, silverado if the price is right. I've been looking around a bit and it seems the 6.2 is pretty hard to find. All 4 dealers near me only have 5.3s and 4.8s with the exception of one lt silverado Z71 with a sticker right around 40k. I'm not really interested in this because it doesn't have 3.73s.

So I started looking around online and I have been finding used 6.2 '10 and '11 trucks with decent mileage for high twenty to mid thirty range depending on the package. A used SLT or LTZ would be nice and some can be had for low thirties.

I'm wondering if its worth it to by new over used when the time comes to buy? I guess I'd like to know what people are paying and what I should expect to be paying if I were to buy new? For example, the silverado I listed above for 40k, where should I be on final price? The rebates don't seem to be too great right now but will probably be better in the fall when the 13's start showing up?

What should I expect on interest rates on new vs used? I have a good credit score (720+) and will probably finance for 6 years.

One last question. I own a saturn for my 150 mile/day commute to work, I've heard theres a $1000 rebate if you're saturn owner? Is this still valid?

Welcome to the site..

I just bought a '12 silverado Crew Z71 5.3L .. Sticker was $39xxx.. ended up with an invoice price of $32,xxx (before trade / tax / title). During the negotiating my salesman did ask if I happened to have a saturn i could trade in because of the extra $1000 incentive. I'm sure that is still available.. im only 3 1/2 weeks into this thing.

Go to www.edmunds.com... you can find out what trucks in your area sell for...

As far as the financing goes.. go with a credit union. They ALWAYS have the best rates.

prices can be regional as well, but a lot of the used 2010 and 2011 SLT/LTZ ex. cabs with good mileage I've seen for 28-33 online in the Midwest.

On a $40k truck you should be able to get it for around 15-20% below sticker. So in this case around 32-34k and you made a great deal. If you are financing why not go new? You'll get a better rate, full warranty and you won't have to worry about the guy who had it before you.

General Motors is announcing an owner loyalty program of $1000 to customers who currently own or lease a 1999 or newer Saturn car and light duty truck and purchase or lease one of the eligible vehicles. This is valid through July 2, 2012. Good luck with your purchase! Let me know if you would like me to locate a vehicle in your area. Thank you.

Late model used cars and trucks are at extremely high prices right now. From like 2008 on, fewer were sold because of the economy so there are of course fewer available used. I'd bet new vs used especially on something somewhat rare like a NHT rig won't be a big difference. You may have to end up ordering. When I was looking at the beginning of last year there were maybe half a dozen 6.2s in the northeast and none had the options I wanted and I didn't want to wait on a factory order and risk losing the incentives they had for first quarter 2011.

Does GM Lease trucks now? 3 years ago when I bought my truck they were not and the cost of financing a bran new truck for me was just too high so I went used. My truck was certified and came with a 1 year GM warranty or 12,000 miles. I figure that I would be able to work out any major kinks within that time period, and I did the truck has been great and many people that look at it for the first time think it is a bran new truck.

I am in the same situation again, I would like to upgrade to a 2500 or 3500 with the duramax but trying to finance $50k right now just doesn't seem possible. I guess I will have to wait to save up a significant down payment before going shopping. :nonod:

I stopped buying new cars for a while because I felt that with leasing, there are a lot of used vehicles out there in great shape. I also feel that if you can get a decent used truck 1 - 2 years old, the bulk of the depreciation has been taken out of the vehicle.

I'd buy new as used prices are too crazy (at least here in CA). I'll tell you what I tell everyone else, "don't be afraid to walk away". I visited every GMC/Chevy dealer in my area and walked out of each. I ended up getting my truck right before Christmas. Sticked for $39,xxx (crazy prices) and I ended up paying $29,xxxx out the door (Costco discounts/rebates/dealer discounts). NO money down with only my trade which was my 2008 GMC Sierra CC 4x4.

They gave me $26k for my 08 Sierra with 60k miles on the clock. I paid $29 out the door for it back in 08, so it only decpreciated $3k in three years, hahaha..

Good luck and work them as they willl try to do the same to you, and everyone else who visits the dealership.....

It sounds like the huge depreciation associated with buying a new car is a thing of the past based on what your saying. I know that at least for the diesel trucks there aren't many used ones for sale and the ones that are seem to be pricey.

Bringing this back to the top. I've found a few trucks that I like. I talked to a dealer about a 12 GMC Sierra SLE extended cab with max tow package. This truck stickers for about $39500. The guy told me he would sell at invoice which he is telling me is $37,400. Does this sound about right? With the $3500 rebate and $200 off for being a credit union member the total comes in around $33700 before tax, title and registration.

Does anyone know of any other discounts that would be available? I am not trading anything by the way.

What should i expect for an interest rate on financing? Loan period would be 72 months. My credit score is at 740.

Thanks!

I'd say the guy can do better than "invoice" on a 2012 this time of the year.

Roughly my 2010 6.2L stickered at 44K. I ordered it and paid right at 39K after taxes I believe. This was the first 2010 truck to hit my dealers lot in Nov 2009.

Being members to things like credit unions, Costco, if you're military, or many other things people can chime in on can help with rebates as well
