but if someone had one would it work if gm is phasing them out and not going to update anymore

You can do "home diagnostics" with a OBD2 from an autoparts store gor a fraction of the cost. Paying a huge amount of money fir the model used by dealers is a waste, can't do anything with it but read and reset codes.

Agreed. I have a Bluetooth adapter and an app that will pull codes, give explanations, possible causes and fixes, and do telemetry. I have the app on my phone and tablet.

The adapter was less than $20 on amazon I believe. The ELM 327 is the name. And there are a few apps for it. The one I used was $5 or $10 i dont remember, but there are free ones and some that cost leas

You are not able to get one with GM licensed software WITHOUT paying a huge amount of money to GM for programming the tool. BUT, if some crook were to get one out of a dealership with software on it, it should work on all the vehicles the software is compatible with. UNLESS GM can deactivate the tool by serial number if it's not accounted for.

What people are not getting is that you can't make changes to your vehicle or make repairs with one, that's what the OP wanted to do. Not really sure if the OP thought this was some kind of magic device or what?

I thought that Tech 2 could do crank relearns, and command solenoids on/off in the tranny, EVAP system, body control systems, etc. ?

I bought my Tech2 from obd2tool and it works great. Cannot really compare software with a

Tech2 as that is comparing hardware to a program. That being said, there is a software side of

things that work alongside the Tech2 which is the TIS2000 software. Getting that working is a

bit of a project in and of itself as the software is old and seems to work best on Windows XP.

The TIS2000 software is really not needed to use the Tech2 though - that is needed if you want

to update the firmware in the various modules in your vehicle like the ECU, BCM, DDM, etc.
