Trailer Brake wiring problem

Hi. I have a 2002 1500HD 4x4 when I hook my trailer up to it everything works, running lights, brake lights, indicator's except my trailer brakes. However when I apply the brakes using the manual switch on the brake controller they work just fine. They will not work when I apply the brake pedal.

Any help or ideas is really appreciated.

Since the brake lights on the trailer are not coming on when you press the brake, then I would think the brakes on the trailer are not either.

Check the wire from the controller to the brake light switch.......

Many thanks for your prompt reply. Sorry if I was not very clear, but the brake lights are coming on on the trailer. The trailer brakes work fine using the manual switch on the controller but when I push the pedal no brakes on the trailer.

Appreciate your time and concern.

The blue wire from the controller is not getting the brake light signal from the truck - probably an issue with the under hood connection. Reference this to troubleshoot: http://www.etrailer.com/faq-cbc.aspx

EDIT: with your brake lights functioning, this will be a tricky one. Sounds like activating it manually gives the wire enough voltage to overcome a possible loose connection ... but hitting just the brake pedal isn't supplying enough voltage.

Well many many thanks to you ALL. After following the above post link to etrailer I read and followed more links and finally found that the CHMSL fuse had blown. I had never heard of this fuse but etrailer directed me to the exact position.

Once again my thanks to you all, a GREAT bunch of guys that give their time to us that know very little.

Problem solved.

Good deal - glad it worked out.

The only lingering question in my mind is .... why did it blow to begin with?

If you do end up with another blown fuse in the future, wire a 12v bulb in place of the fuse - if there's a short that will blow the fuse, the light will be lit fairly bright. Unplug or disconnect the wiring in the offending circuit until the light goes out, & when it does you've found the circuit with the short. Repair it, then check the light again to make sure it's fixed. Saves you fuses, and a few headaches as well.

Many thanks for your reply. I can only assume that after I found a cut in the 'trailer cable' and found a broken wire it had shorted out.

After rewiring the trailer cable thats when all this started. First a blown turn signal fuse, replaced it that was ok. Then when I tried the brakes nothing. Checked the truck plug-in and found a corroded wire feed to the brake, so replaced the plug-in as as it was a factory install. After that was done thats when I found that the manual switch on the controller worked but not the brake pedal. Thats when I searched the internet and found this great group.

Once again many many thanks for the help.

Regards Les
